01

What does this hire really come down to?

Who manages the quarterly accounting cycle? This role handles capital calls, distribution waterfalls, and partner capital account reconciliations. The work requires strict adherence to ASC 946 and complex LP reporting standards.

Your new hire will spend their days tracking management fees and reviewing NAV packages generated by outside administrators. They act as the primary internal check on external reports. Accuracy here prevents investor disputes during capital calls.

Ask them to explain how they handle carry calculations in a multi-class structure. Ask how they reconcile a fund admin output against their own shadow accounting models. If they cannot walk through the waterfall logic, they cannot do the job.

You must define the exact scope of this role during our initial conversation to avoid hiring someone who only knows one small part of the accounting cycle. Ask candidates to describe the total number of funds they managed simultaneously in their last role. Determine if they were responsible for the full lifecycle from capital call to final distribution. Press them on whether they produced the full set of financial statements or if they only handled specific sub-ledgers. If they state they worked on complex multi-class structures, force them to explain the difference in how management fees are calculated across those tiers. If a candidate says they used specific software for waterfall modeling, ask them to identify the inputs that most frequently cause errors. You must probe how they reconcile their own shadow accounting records against the reports provided by external fund administrators. Listen for whether they can pinpoint the specific line items that often conflict between these two sources. Ask them to walk through the exact process for a clawback calculation. If they cannot explain how the fund structure impacts the distribution of carry to limited partners, they lack the needed depth for this position. Do not accept broad claims of experience as evidence. Require them to break down a specific project where they identified a material discrepancy in a NAV package. Question them on how they communicated that error to both the fund administrator and their own internal management team. A candidate who only understands the theoretical rules of ASC 946 will fail when faced with practical data issues. You need someone who can show they have solved these problems before. We will use these technical interrogations to disqualify anyone who relies on automated software outputs without understanding the underlying math. This rigorous vetting process saves you from wasting time on candidates who cannot immediately manage your fund operations.

02

What do we check before you see anyone?

We begin every search by defining if your firm prioritizes speed of quarterly close or depth of reporting complexity. We verify whether your workflow demands a generalist who balances many funds or a specialist who manages one complex vehicle with multiple sidecars. During our initial scope conversation we confirm your tolerance for hiring a candidate who performs deep shadow accounting versus one who manages external administrator relations. We push candidates to identify trade-offs between manual model control and software-based automation. We investigate if they prefer solving data reconciliation gaps themselves or delegating these tasks to administrators.

  • 01CPA status or current progress toward the credential to confirm baseline technical accounting knowledge.
  • 02Direct experience reconciling ILPA reporting formats against investor request requirements.
  • 03Proficiency in Investran, eFront, Allvue, or Yardi to prove they can operate your specific tech stack.
  • 04Ability to manage capital account roll-forwards from scratch without relying on software templates.
  • 05Understanding of the differences between management company accounting and fund-level reporting.
  • 06Verification of their specific role in waterfall modeling for carried interest distributions.

03

Where do we find them?

We source candidates from public accounting firms with dedicated private equity audit groups, fund administration firms where they review portfolios, and other private equity funds. We look for accountants frustrated by low upward mobility or those seeking to move from fund administration into a direct investment firm seat.

People move when they have reached the limit of their learning in a fund admin setting and want to see the decision side of the ledger. Others move because their current firm lacks internal fund accounting capabilities, forcing them to do more administrative data entry than accounting analysis.

04

Which hiring mistakes should you watch for?

  • 01Hiring someone from general corporate accounting who lacks specific private equity or ASC 946 technical background.
  • 02Ignoring the need for software-specific experience in platforms like Investran or eFront.
  • 03Failing to test if the candidate can explain the mechanics of a distribution waterfall under various conditions.

05

The search in three steps

  • 01Identify candidates with technical fund accounting backgrounds and the required software experience.
  • 02Execute technical interviews focusing on waterfall logic, capital calls, and ASC 946 applications.
  • 03Extend offer based on confirmed experience and agreed terms for a permanent contingency search.

How your Fund Accountant search runs

How does The Six-Step Search work?

Research, direct conversations and professional judgment, with follow-through through the offer.

  1. Search Calibration

We establish what this person must own: reporting demands, systems responsibilities, team, decision authority and first-year needs. We ask what would make an otherwise good candidate wrong for this job.

You get: An agreed search brief and a clear basis for judging fit.

  2. Market Mapping

We research relevant operating environments, not just matching titles. An owner-led business, a portfolio company and a regulated lender can need different experience from someone with the same job title.

You get: A reasoned research direction, with scope differences made explicit.

  3. Professional Contact Intelligence

We research professional ways to contact the people identified. Finding a name is a starting point; it does not establish availability, interest or fit.

You get: A route to a professional conversation, not simply a candidate list.

  4. Persistent Personalized Outreach

We contact people directly about the actual work and follow through on the conversation. We explain the remit and discuss whether a move could make sense. Not everyone will answer or want to move.

You get: A candid view of interest, objections and the tradeoffs in your opportunity.

  5. Live Candidate Qualification

We discuss what each person actually owned, the complexity involved, their reasons for considering a move, compensation expectations and practical constraints. The questions fit the assignment, from a staff accounting seat to CFO.

You get: A candidate account of relevant ownership, with gaps left visible.

  6. Candidate Intelligence and Process Support

Written recruiter context explains relevant experience, strengths and remaining questions. After introduction, we gather feedback, resolve questions, discuss changed requirements and support interviews and offer decisions. You retain the hiring decision and technical assessment.

You get: Continuity through the offer, rather than a handoff that ends at an introduction.

Questions people ask

Is there a charge to start a search for someone to handle our distribution waterfalls?

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.

How do you verify technical competency?

We confirm their hands-on experience with specific software and review their history of handling capital calls and waterfall distributions. We focus on their ability to explain complex accounting scenarios.

What is the difference between a Fund Accountant and a Controller?

A Fund Accountant handles day-to-day transaction processing and reporting. A Controller has final approval authority over the NAV and manages the relationship with external auditors.

Can you provide a contractor for seasonal work?

Yes, we handle contract, temp-to-perm, and busy-season requests. Terms for these arrangements are agreed upon per engagement.

What is the fee for a Fund Accountant search?

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. The fee and terms are agreed in writing before we start.

How soon will I see a Fund Accountant shortlist?

It depends on the seat, the location and the pay. We give you an honest read after the calibration call and we do not promise dates we cannot control.

What about counteroffers on a Fund Accountant hire?

We ask every Fund Accountant candidate early why they would move and what their employer might do to keep them. Counteroffer risk goes in the written brief before you make an offer.

What is your guarantee?

We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.

What don't you do?

We do not post your Fund Accountant job and forward whoever applies. We do not send stacks of unscreened resumes, and we do not recruit outside accounting, finance, banking and insurance.
