What does this hire really come down to?

Can the person manage daily NAV production without needing constant supervision? How does the candidate translate trades into investor reports? Who approves the adjustment if the capital account is inaccurate or fund administration oversight fails?

Expect them to reconcile cash and positions daily. They must verify performance fees and manage the waterfall calculations. If the ledger is wrong, the investor report is wrong. They must find the source of the discrepancy before the month end.

Ask them to explain how they handle specific hedge fund strategies. Ask how they reconcile breaks between the administrator and the internal books. Question their process for adjusting management fee calculations when assets fluctuate mid-period.

Scope clarity starts by defining the ledger complexity. Do not just look for accounting skills. Ask how they audit the administrator. If they cannot describe the discrepancy between internal shadow accounting and external statements, they lack the correct experience. Probe the specific fund structures they know. ASC 946 technical knowledge is a baseline. You must verify if they can explain how specific hedge fund strategies impact the capital account. Ask for a breakdown of their involvement in month-end close. Did they own the full process or only a part? Evidence of competence shows when they explain how they handle a break in cash or position reconciliation. If they claim to know waterfall calculations, ask them to talk through a scenario where a fee is adjusted mid-period. A clear answer identifies the impact on the investor statement. Ask how they manage reporting for multiple funds. This role needs someone who manages the nuance of asset fluctuation without manual errors. If they focus on theory rather than the specific software they used, push for more detail on their workflow. Ask what happens when the fund administrator reports an incorrect NAV. Does the candidate investigate the underlying trade data or simply pass the error forward? You need someone who knows when the math is wrong. A good candidate describes their process for error logging and remediation. Question their involvement in capital calls. Do they understand the lifecycle from notice to ledger entry? If they only saw the ledger side without the underlying investor activity, they may struggle with the scope here. You want a person who connects the trade to the ledger to the investor report. When assessing their background, check for exposure to complex instruments like derivatives or private assets. If they only know simple public equities, they will fail to capture the nuances of a sophisticated fund. Demand examples of their interaction with tax teams or auditors. This shows they understand how their accounting inputs affect the final fund tax return. Look for someone who is comfortable questioning the administrator. If they simply accept administrator output as final, they are not the accountant you need for this fund. Focus the conversation on their ownership of the data. If they shift the burden to systems, they are not your choice. The best candidates own their errors and explain how they fixed them.

02

What do we check before you see anyone?

We verify their experience with specific hedge fund structures. We confirm they have worked with NAV packages. We test their ability to explain ASC 946 accounting standards. We check that they understand the difference between internal and external fund accounting. We screen for clear evidence of managing capital calls. We confirm they have used software like Investran or similar systems.

03

Where do we find them?

We look for talent inside current hedge fund firms or large fund administration houses. Candidates move when their current fund changes strategy or when the volume of fund administration work becomes too repetitive. We target those who want more exposure to the front office or who want to move from a back office admin firm to a direct fund role.

04

Which hiring mistakes should you watch for?

  • 01Hiring a general corporate accountant who lacks experience with hedge fund specific instruments.
  • 02Overlooking a candidate who cannot explain the mechanics of a waterfall calculation.
  • 03Focusing too much on years of experience rather than direct exposure to daily NAV and investor reporting workflows.

05

The search in three steps

  • 01Targeting profiles with technical hedge fund accounting knowledge and fund administration experience.
  • 02Vetting candidates on specific software and accounting standards like ASC 946.
  • 03Presenting you with qualified talent ready for your specific fund strategy.

How your Hedge Fund Accountant search runs

How does The Six-Step Search work?

Research, direct conversations and professional judgment, with follow-through through the offer.

  1. Search Calibration

We establish what this person must own: reporting demands, systems responsibilities, team, decision authority and first-year needs. We ask what would make an otherwise good candidate wrong for this job.

You get: An agreed search brief and a clear basis for judging fit.

  2. Market Mapping

We research relevant operating environments, not just matching titles. An owner-led business, a portfolio company and a regulated lender can need different experience from someone with the same job title.

You get: A reasoned research direction, with scope differences made explicit.

  3. Professional Contact Intelligence

We research professional ways to contact the people identified. Finding a name is a starting point; it does not establish availability, interest or fit.

You get: A route to a professional conversation, not simply a candidate list.

  4. Persistent Personalized Outreach

We contact people directly about the actual work and follow through on the conversation. We explain the remit and discuss whether a move could make sense. Not everyone will answer or want to move.

You get: A candid view of interest, objections and the tradeoffs in your opportunity.

  5. Live Candidate Qualification

We discuss what each person actually owned, the complexity involved, their reasons for considering a move, compensation expectations and practical constraints. The questions fit the assignment, from a staff accounting seat to CFO.

You get: A candidate account of relevant ownership, with gaps left visible.

  6. Candidate Intelligence and Process Support

Written recruiter context explains relevant experience, strengths and remaining questions. After introduction, we gather feedback, resolve questions, discuss changed requirements and support interviews and offer decisions. You retain the hiring decision and technical assessment.

You get: Continuity through the offer, rather than a handoff that ends at an introduction.

What about counteroffers on a Hedge Fund Accountant hire?

We ask every Hedge Fund Accountant candidate early why they would move and what their employer might do to keep them. Counteroffer risk goes in the written brief before you make an offer.
