01
What does this hire really come down to?
This role exists to own the risk associated with an audit opinion. You need someone who decides which technical adjustments matter and which are noise. They must handle the client relationship during tough negotiations without compromising the firm standards or the independence of the audit.
They oversee the entire engagement team. Their work involves planning the strategy, reviewing high-risk areas, and signing the report. Who decides if an audit finding requires an adjustment to the financial statements? Who approves the adjustment to the budget when staffing hours exceed the estimate?
We ask them these questions: How do you handle a client who refuses a necessary adjustment? Describe a time you had to pull a staff member off an engagement because they lacked the technical capability. What is your process for evaluating the internal controls of a client in a high-risk industry?
You must prioritize a scope conversation that identifies the exact regulatory frameworks the candidate manages daily. Ask for specific examples of recent GAAP or IFRS interpretations that changed their audit approach. Demand proof of how they prioritize audit adjustments versus material misstatements when a client challenges their findings. You need to see if their logic aligns with your risk appetite. Do not accept general summaries of their audit methodology. Push for details on how they determined the risk of material misstatement during their last three audit cycles. Ask them to walk you through a specific instance where they modified an audit program based on an emerging industry risk factor. If they cannot explain the underlying reason for a policy shift or a technical disagreement with a client, they are likely not functioning at the partner level you require. Require evidence of how they document these decisions to withstand third party peer review. Probe their history of managing professional skepticism when the client maintains a long relationship with the firm. A candidate who struggles to describe their decision making process under pressure will fail to provide the firm with necessary protection. Examine their recent audit files or ask them to summarize complex technical memos they authored for audit committee presentation. Verify they have handled difficult consultations with national office resources on accounting treatment. If they cannot cite recent technical updates from the FASB or PCAOB that impacted their recent engagements, discard the candidate. This conversation should reveal if they possess the technical depth to sign the audit report without reliance on others. Your goal is to isolate whether they lead the audit or merely follow a pre-set process.
02
What do we check before you see anyone?
We apply strict screening criteria to confirm the candidate possesses the required experience for this partner position.
- 01Current CPA status and active licensure are non-negotiable requirements.
- 02Verification of direct experience signing audit reports as the lead partner.
- 03Evidence of managing a specific industry niche portfolio like construction or real estate.
- 04Review of their history managing engagement realization and billing efficiency.
- 05Assessment of their experience in oversight and mentoring of audit managers and seniors.
- 06Confirmation of their technical proficiency in managing SEC or private company audit requirements.
03
Where do we find them?
We source candidates from established CPA firms with similar audit portfolios. Professionals move for several reasons. Some seek a clearer path to equity if their current firm is stagnant. Others look for a shift in client size or a firm that supports their specific technical niche better. We look for partners currently managing similar audit volumes who have hit a ceiling in their current environment.
04
Which hiring mistakes should you watch for?
- 01Hiring a manager who lacks actual sign-off experience and expecting them to learn on the fly.
- 02Ignoring poor realization metrics under the assumption that the new partner will grow the book quickly.
- 03Failing to vet how they delegate audit field work to managers versus handling too much detail themselves.
05
The search in three steps
- 01We map the local market for CPA firms holding audit portfolios that overlap with your industry niches.
- 02We conduct phone interviews to verify their current signature authority and client retention history.
- 03We introduce candidates who demonstrate both technical compliance and the ability to manage firm-level profitability.
How your Audit Partner search runs
How does The Six-Step Search work?
One sequence, from a well-defined seat to a shortlist you can judge.
Search Calibration
We start with a call about the seat, the books, the owners and the people the hire will work with. We learn what the role must fix in the first year and what would make a candidate wrong even if the resume looks right.
You get: A written search brief: scope, must-haves, deal-breakers and the pay range, agreed with you.
Market Mapping
We map the companies and institutions where the right people already work: similar size, similar ownership, similar complexity, in your market and in others.
You get: The target list of companies and institutions we will search, reviewed with you before outreach.
Professional Contact Intelligence
We find direct ways to reach the people on the map. Most are employed and not reading job boards, so reaching them takes real research.
You get: Direct routes to people who are not on job boards, researched for your search.
Persistent Personalized Outreach
We call and write to people individually and follow up. Interest varies, so we discuss the actual opportunity rather than promising a particular response.
You get: One-to-one conversations about your actual role, followed up, never a mass email blast.
Live Candidate Qualification
We speak with every candidate before you do. We check scope, systems, reporting lines, compensation expectations, location and why they would move.
You get: Only candidates we have spoken with, checked on scope, systems, pay, location and motive.
Candidate Intelligence and Process Support
You receive a short written brief on each finalist covering what they have done, where they are thin and what they want. Then we help with interviews, references and the offer.
You get: A short written brief on each finalist, plus help with interviews, references, counteroffer risk and the offer.
Questions people ask
Are fees due before you find a partner to manage my audit opinion risks?
No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.
How do decision rights differ for an Audit Partner versus a Senior Manager?
An Audit Partner holds the final signature authority and assumes the legal liability for the audit opinion. A Senior Manager executes the audit plan and reviews work but does not have the authority to finalize or sign the report.
How do you verify if a candidate is a good cultural fit for a CPA firm?
We focus on how they manage conflict with clients and how they handle team oversight. We specifically ask how they explain complex technical issues to firm management versus clients.
What happens if we need a contract or interim partner for a busy season?
We handle defined contract, temp-to-perm, and busy-season work upon request. We agree to specific terms for each engagement before the work begins.
How soon will I see a Audit Partner shortlist?
It depends on the seat, the location and the pay. We give you an honest read after the calibration call and we do not promise dates we cannot control.
What about counteroffers on a Audit Partner hire?
We ask every Audit Partner candidate early why they would move and what their employer might do to keep them. Counteroffer risk goes in the written brief before you make an offer.
What is your guarantee?
We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.
What don't you do?
We do not post your Audit Partner job and forward whoever applies. We do not send stacks of unscreened resumes, and we do not recruit outside accounting, finance, banking and insurance.
