Financial Headhunters Salary Guide

  • Director of Finance Systems
  • Financial Systems Manager

01

What does this hire really come down to?

You need a practitioner who replaces manual spreadsheet reconciliations with automated system workflows. This person writes the logic that bridges your ERP to sub-ledgers. If your current accounting team spends two days every month manually importing data because the systems do not sync, you are losing money on labor. You need someone who converts messy source data into clean ledger entries.

How do you map a chart of accounts to accommodate new business lines or entity acquisitions without using manual mapping tables? They take ownership of the data pipeline. You are hiring for the ability to turn accounting requirements into database queries and automated reconciliation rules that trigger when a transaction posts.

This role is not for someone who calls software vendors when a field does not update. You need a person who edits system configurations directly. They must set user permissions to lock down financial data access and run system migrations that preserve transaction history. They prove their value when they stabilize the environment while the company adds users or transaction volume.

02

What do we check before you see anyone?

  • 01We ask them to describe a specific chart of accounts redesign they led. We look for whether they mapped the logic before changing the production environment.
  • 02We ask them to show how they built automated reconciliation scripts for bank feeds or payment processor data that had no standard API connection.
  • 03We ask how they configured user permissions to meet SOX audit standards while letting staff perform their daily tasks.
  • 04We ask them to walk us through a test script they wrote for an ERP upgrade. We look for how they identified edge cases where data flows fail.
  • 05We ask for a specific time they fixed a broken data integration between two systems. We look for their ability to read logs and correct the mapping.
  • 06We ask them to explain a technical change to a non-technical Controller. We look for whether the team actually stopped using the old manual workaround.

03

Where do we find them?

We target individuals in companies doubling in size where the finance team is overwhelmed by manual data entry. These people currently own the accounting systems and are actively fixing broken workflows in their ERP. They change jobs when their current employer refuses to let them improve the architecture, forcing them to spend their time on mundane data entry tasks.

We also recruit finance systems consultants who spend their lives on the road installing software. These people want to leave consulting because they never see if their system designs work after they move to the next client. They move to a full-time role when they want to own the consequences of their technical choices rather than dropping off a project and walking away.

04

Which hiring mistakes should you watch for?

  • 01Hiring a candidate who only acts as a project manager. They will pass every technical problem to a third-party consultant and charge you for the billable hours.
  • 02Hiring someone who knows accounting rules but cannot configure a database or ERP. You end up with a team that knows what the numbers should be but cannot force the system to produce them.
  • 03Hiring for specific software familiarity rather than logic. If they only know one ERP interface, they will be unable to solve problems when that specific software updates its schema or breaks an integration.

05

The search in three steps

  • 01We screen applicants against companies with high-volume transaction environments to verify they have owned a full system lifecycle.
  • 02We conduct a deep dive into how they solved past data migration or integration failures to confirm their technical independence.
  • 03We deliver a short list of people who have documented experience stabilizing a broken close process, so you avoid interviewing candidates who are just good at talking.

How your Finance Systems Manager search runs

How does The Six-Step Search work?

One sequence, from a well-defined seat to a shortlist you can judge.

  1. Search Calibration

We start with a call about the seat, the books, the owners and the people the hire will work with. We learn what the role must fix in the first year and what would make a candidate wrong even if the resume looks right.

You get: A written search brief: scope, must-haves, deal-breakers and the pay range, agreed with you.

  2. Market Mapping

We map the companies and institutions where the right people already work: similar size, similar ownership, similar complexity, in your market and in others.

You get: The target list of companies and institutions we will search, reviewed with you before outreach.

  3. Professional Contact Intelligence

We find direct ways to reach the people on the map. Most are employed and not reading job boards, so reaching them takes real research.

You get: Direct routes to people who are not on job boards, researched for your search.

  4. Persistent Personalized Outreach

We call and write to people individually and follow up. Interest varies, so we discuss the actual opportunity rather than promising a particular response.

You get: One-to-one conversations about your actual role, followed up, never a mass email blast.

  5. Live Candidate Qualification

We speak with every candidate before you do. We check scope, systems, reporting lines, compensation expectations, location and why they would move.

You get: Only candidates we have spoken with, checked on scope, systems, pay, location and motive.

  6. Candidate Intelligence and Process Support

You receive a short written brief on each finalist covering what they have done, where they are thin and what they want. Then we help with interviews, references and the offer.

You get: A short written brief on each finalist, plus help with interviews, references, counteroffer risk and the offer.

Questions people ask

When can we expect to see candidates after the search parameters are set?

We reach out to relevant candidates the moment you approve the search criteria. We present the first qualified individuals within a week of starting.

How do you assess candidates who lack specific experience in our exact software?

We ignore brand names and test their underlying logic for database and accounting workflows. We want to see how they handle data mapping and configuration regardless of the specific ERP interface.

What advice do you provide if our chosen candidate is faced with a counteroffer?

We discover their real reasons for leaving early in the interview process. We confirm these motivations match your offer so they have no reason to stay at their current firm.

Is there a method to keep our firm identity concealed throughout the search? We approach candidates using a blind search description to protect your identity until they pass our initial review.

We manage all initial outreach as a blind search. We do not disclose your identity until the candidate proves their technical fit and passes our screening.

When is your fee due if we decide to move forward with a hire?

We send the invoice only after you sign an offer letter with the candidate we source. Fee terms are defined in the written agreement we sign before we start.

How soon will I see a Finance Systems Manager shortlist?

It depends on the seat, the location and the pay. We give you an honest read after the calibration call and we do not promise dates we cannot control.

What is your guarantee?

We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.

What don't you do?

We do not post your Finance Systems Manager job and forward whoever applies. We do not send stacks of unscreened resumes, and we do not recruit outside accounting, finance, banking and insurance.
