01

Team composition and structural levels

Private fund finance requires a clear hierarchy to manage complex reporting. The CFO oversees the entire finance function and fund structure. Fund Controllers handle day-to-day operations and NAV reviews. Fund Accountants manage the ledger and initial calculations. Management Company Controllers focus on GP-level accounting and tax. Family Office roles split into investment accounting and consolidated personal wealth reporting.

Use controllers to supervise fund administrators. Use senior accountants for the direct data entry and reconciliation work. Do not ask for general corporate accounting experience if your fund has complex waterfall or carried interest structures. Hire for specific fund life cycle knowledge.

02

Interview question bank

You need to test how they handle specific accounting mechanics. Ask about their process for calculating carried interest. If they talk only about theory, push for their experience with specific software like Investran, eFront, Allvue, or Yardi. Listen for specific steps they take to audit NAV packages from third-party admins. Watch for people who cannot explain the difference between a capital call and a distribution.

Evaluate their understanding of ASC 946 and fund accounting standards. Ask how they reconcile partner capital accounts against cash inflows and outflows. If they cannot explain a waterfall model in plain terms, they lack the needed depth for private funds. Follow up by asking how they handle data discrepancies between the admin and the internal ledger.

  • 01Walk me through your process for checking NAV packages from administrators.
  • 02How do you handle complex waterfall and carried interest calculations?
  • 03Explain how you reconcile capital account roll-forwards.
  • 04What is your approach to ASC 946 implementation?
  • 05Describe a time you found a material error in a partner capital statement.

Common hiring mistakes

One big mistake is hiring corporate accountants for fund roles. The technical shift from general GAAP to fund-specific accounting is hard. You waste time training them on basic fund structures. Look for candidates with experience in LP reporting and capital call mechanics.

Another mistake is overvaluing broad industry knowledge over specific technical tool experience. If your firm uses Allvue, hire someone who knows how to configure it. Avoid candidates who only know Excel spreadsheets. You also lose time if they cannot independently audit a third-party fund admin. Avoid candidates who rely on others to check the numbers.

  • 01Hiring corporate accountants without fund experience
  • 02Overlooking software proficiency in Investran or eFront
  • 03Ignoring the need for independent NAV review skills
  • 04Valuing theory over technical reporting practice
  • 05Underestimating the complexity of GP accounting

04

Credentials verification guide

The CPA license is the standard baseline but does not verify fund knowledge. Check the status through the issuing State Board of Accountancy. This proves they passed a uniform exam. It does not prove they understand waterfall mechanics or capital account roll-forwards.

Other certifications can confirm general accounting focus but verify the issuer. A certificate confirms a course was completed. It is not a license. Always test the practical application of their credentials during the technical round. Confirm they can read an ILPA template without guidance.

05

Scoping and job selection

Choose a Fund Controller when you need someone to oversee admin relationships and own the NAV. Choose a Fund Accountant for daily ledger maintenance. If you manage your own accounting internally, you need a high-level Controller who understands ASC 946. If you outsource to an admin, you need a Manager who can review the work.

Select candidates based on their specific asset class experience. Real estate funds are different from private credit funds. Real estate needs knowledge of Yardi and property accounting. Credit needs loan ops and debt servicing knowledge. Align the title with the actual complexity of the fund life cycle.

  • 01Identify internal vs external reporting needs
  • 02Match asset class to specific software experience
  • 03Determine the required depth of waterfall calculation oversight
  • 04Scope for GP-level versus fund-level accounting responsibilities
  • 05Assess the volume of LP reporting required

Questions people ask

Why do I need a fund accountant instead of a general ledger accountant?

Fund accounting requires knowledge of ASC 946 and complex distribution waterfalls. General ledger accounting does not cover these specialized structures.

What is the primary indicator of a strong fund candidate?

They must demonstrate technical knowledge of capital account roll-forwards and the ability to audit external fund administrator outputs.

How do I evaluate software skills like Investran or eFront?

Ask for specific workflows they created within the tool. Listen for details on handling investor data or reporting outputs.

Should I require a CPA for every accounting role?

It serves as a baseline for accounting standards knowledge but does not replace the need for specific experience in private equity or credit.
