01

What does this hire really come down to?

Can the candidate produce accurate NAV packages and capital account roll-forwards independently? You need someone who knows the distinction between management company books and the actual fund-level accounting. Who approves the adjustment if the candidate cannot explain the flow from a capital call through a waterfall distribution?

Expect them to own the monthly and quarterly close process independently. They must manage third-party administrators effectively rather than just passing data back and forth. Can they catch an error in an administrator's NAV package before it hits the internal controller's desk? This is the core of the position.

Ask them specifically how they handle carried interest calculations for complex deal structures. Test their knowledge of ASC 946 and ILPA reporting standards with real scenarios. If they hesitate when explaining how a specific investor's clawback provision works, look for someone with more direct fund-level exposure.

Focus your initial scoping conversation on the candidate's specific handling of discrepancies during the monthly close. Ask for a concrete example where they identified a material error in a third-party administrator output that directly impacted the NAV. A strong candidate provides a step-by-step account of their investigative process starting from the ledger entry and moving through the reconciliation of the capital call or distribution notice. Watch for technical depth regarding how they validated the carry balance or the management fee calculation against the fund limited partnership agreement. If they speak only about reviewing high-level summaries without digging into the underlying trial balance, they lack the operational rigor required for this seat. Ask them to walk you through a scenario where the waterfall calculation for a specific deal structure became complex due to shifting deal terms or liquidity events. Verify their ability to explain the accounting entries behind the waterfall rather than just stating the result. The best evidence is their capacity to explain how specific fund clauses in the agreement govern the specific accounting treatment in Investran or similar platforms. If they cannot reconcile a partner capital balance to the ledger during the interview, they will not succeed in this role.

02

What do we check before you see anyone?

We verify technical and operational competency through these six focused checks.

  • 01Confirmation of direct experience with Investran, eFront, Allvue, or Yardi, specifically in a private capital environment.
  • 02Demonstrated ability to prepare capital account roll-forwards and reconcile partner capital balances to fund-level records.
  • 03Evidence of oversight regarding third-party fund administrators, including the review of monthly NAV reporting and cash flow reconciliations.
  • 04Detailed breakdown of experience with waterfall mechanics and the accounting treatment of carried interest.
  • 05Specific review of ILPA compliance in historical investor reporting and capital call distribution notices.
  • 06Validation of CPA status or progress toward completion for those handling complex management company financial reporting.

03

Where do we find them?

We source candidates from accounting firms performing fund audits and administrators managing back-office tasks. We look for individuals currently in investment firms handling internal proprietary reporting. We also target those at smaller firms seeking to move to settings with institutionalized fund structures.

Candidates consider moving when their current environment restricts their exposure to the full investment lifecycle or when they lack visibility into the broader portfolio monitoring process. Those in administrative roles often move to gain internal accounting experience where they can influence the underlying data quality rather than just verifying it.

04

Which hiring mistakes should you watch for?

  • 01Hiring a generalist accountant who lacks specific experience with the unique liquidity events found in private equity or private credit funds.
  • 02Overlooking the difference between someone who enters data into an accounting system and someone who understands the underlying tax or valuation implications.
  • 03Assuming a candidate who understands fund audit procedures can seamlessly transition to the daily operational intensity of internal fund accounting.

05

The search in three steps

  • 01We identify professionals with direct experience in the required fund accounting systems and capital reporting workflows.
  • 02We assess technical accuracy through scenarios involving waterfall calculations and NAV reconciliation.
  • 03We present verified candidates for your review; our fee is earned only if you hire the person we introduce, with terms agreed in writing.

How your Senior Fund Accountant search runs

How does The Six-Step Search work?

One sequence, from a well-defined seat to a shortlist you can judge.

  1. Search Calibration

We start with a call about the seat, the books, the owners and the people the hire will work with. We learn what the role must fix in the first year and what would make a candidate wrong even if the resume looks right.

You get: A written search brief: scope, must-haves, deal-breakers and the pay range, agreed with you.

  2. Market Mapping

We map the companies and institutions where the right people already work: similar size, similar ownership, similar complexity, in your market and in others.

You get: The target list of companies and institutions we will search, reviewed with you before outreach.

  3. Professional Contact Intelligence

We find direct ways to reach the people on the map. Most are employed and not reading job boards, so reaching them takes real research.

You get: Direct routes to people who are not on job boards, researched for your search.

  4. Persistent Personalized Outreach

We call and write to people individually and follow up. Interest varies, so we discuss the actual opportunity rather than promising a particular response.

You get: One-to-one conversations about your actual role, followed up, never a mass email blast.

  5. Live Candidate Qualification

We speak with every candidate before you do. We check scope, systems, reporting lines, compensation expectations, location and why they would move.

You get: Only candidates we have spoken with, checked on scope, systems, pay, location and motive.

  6. Candidate Intelligence and Process Support

You receive a short written brief on each finalist covering what they have done, where they are thin and what they want. Then we help with interviews, references and the offer.

You get: A short written brief on each finalist, plus help with interviews, references, counteroffer risk and the offer.
