01
What does this hire really come down to?
This role requires someone to own the entire financial cycle of a private credit fund. You need a person who can build or audit waterfall models and carry calculations from scratch. Do not hire someone who only knows how to review output prepared by others. You need a technical lead.
Your new CFO must handle complex loan operations and investor reporting with zero guidance. They act as the primary financial authority in the room when speaking with the investment committee. Who approves the adjustment to the NAV when the loan valuation changes? This is a functional role that requires high attention to detail regarding ASC 946 and NAV accuracy.
Ask them to walk through a specific instance where they identified an error in a capital call distribution. Ask how they reconcile partner capital accounts when the investment structure includes multiple tiers of debt. Ask them to explain the specific tax implications for domestic and offshore feeders in the credit space. You need clear answers on how they manage cash flow visibility during a heavy deployment cycle.
Defining scope for this CFO role requires moving past high level titles to examine the mechanics of your fund structure. During our initial conversation, we must isolate the specific debt vehicles you operate. Ask yourself if this role involves high frequency drawdown cycles or a static portfolio. If you require them to stand up a new system, you must ask how they have migrated data between accounting software in their past roles. Do not accept a candidate who only reports on numbers without showing proof they built the underlying logic. We will test their ability to explain the distinction between tax reporting and GAAP requirements for complex credit instruments. Ask for a specific example of how they managed a liquidity crunch where multiple capital calls overlapped. If they cannot explain the impact of debt covenants on your NAV calculation, they lack the necessary technical focus. We look for candidates who can provide a detailed breakdown of their approach to audit preparation and their direct interactions with external auditors. If a candidate uses passive language about overseeing a third party administrator, push for evidence of how they detected and corrected calculation errors on the administrator side. Your goal is to find a practitioner who treats the ledger as their primary tool for investor communication rather than a secondary output.
02
What do we check before you see anyone?
We verify current CPA licensure status through state boards. We check their experience with fund accounting systems like Investran or Allvue. We review their history of fund administration to check their management of third-party providers. We assess their experience with full-cycle audits for regulated entities. We confirm their work with waterfall modeling and catch-up provisions. We probe their experience with loan operations and credit monitoring to check their understanding of asset-level tracking.
03
Where do we find them?
We source candidates from mid-sized fund administration firms and competing private credit shops. We look for individuals currently in a Fund Controller position who have hit a ceiling regarding decision authority or compensation growth. We also look for finance leaders at family offices who handle direct lending portfolios. They move when their current shop shifts away from private credit toward asset classes they do not care to master. They also move when the fund size reaches a point where their internal systems can no longer scale without a total platform rebuild.
04
Which hiring mistakes should you watch for?
- 01Hiring a candidate who only understands the management company side but lacks deep expertise in the fund-level waterfall mechanics.
- 02Ignoring the lack of direct oversight experience regarding third-party fund administrators which leaves the firm vulnerable to reporting lag.
- 03Overlooking the difference between someone who can interpret investor reports versus someone who can actually build the models that generate those reports.
05
The search in three steps
- 01We review our existing network of fund accounting professionals to isolate those with specific private credit experience and CPA credentials.
- 02We conduct a deep-dive screening focused on waterfall, carry, and loan operation logic to confirm they can perform the work required immediately.
- 03We present only the qualified candidates who can handle the specific ASC 946 and NAV reporting demands of your current fund structure.

One sequence, from a well-defined seat to a shortlist you can judge.

Market Mapping
We map the companies and institutions where the right people already work: similar size, similar ownership, similar complexity, in your market and in others.

Questions people ask
Is an initial fee required to find a CFO who builds private credit waterfall models?
No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.
Does this role involve managing the investment team?
No, this role focuses on financial operations, reporting, and fund accounting. The CFO manages the accounting and loan operations staff but does not direct investment strategy.
Is this a remote or office-based role?
The requirement depends on your firm's specific policy. We will qualify candidates based on your preference for daily office presence or hybrid arrangements.
How do you distinguish a Controller from a CFO?
In this context, the CFO holds final decision rights on fund-wide financial policy and external partner communication. A Controller focuses on the technical execution of the ledger and reporting.
How soon will I see a Private Credit Fund CFO shortlist?
It depends on the seat, the location and the pay. We give you an honest read after the calibration call and we do not promise dates we cannot control.
What about counteroffers on a Private Credit Fund CFO hire?
We ask every Private Credit Fund CFO candidate early why they would move and what their employer might do to keep them. Counteroffer risk goes in the written brief before you make an offer.
What is your guarantee?
We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.
What don't you do?
We do not post your Private Credit Fund CFO job and forward whoever applies. We do not send stacks of unscreened resumes, and we do not recruit outside accounting, finance, banking and insurance.
