01
What does this hire really come down to?
Managers often hire for speed at the window, which fails if the person cannot switch to a sales conversation. A productive universal banker spots a product need while performing a standard deposit. If your hire stays in teller mode, your branch sales numbers will not rise.
You need a person who manages regulatory risk while talking to customers. This person clears compliance items while the lobby stays busy. They view account openings as a way to build a client base rather than a chore.
We prioritize candidates who finish the entire task from document collection to product referral. They handle the compliance paperwork and the follow-up work themselves. This removes the gap between branch audit requirements and sales goals.
02
Where do we find them?
We recruit people working at retail banks today. We look for individuals who handle high volume and have a strict sales quota. They change jobs when their current branch limits their ability to solve complex customer issues or pushes too much automation.
We also recruit from credit unions where staff handle full-service tasks. These individuals manage more ownership of the member relationship than typical retail staff. They change jobs when they want a role where their advice results in branch revenue growth.
To source talent beyond retail banks and credit unions, we target staff within high-volume investment centers or specialized boutique financial offices where advisors handle administrative documentation alongside client acquisitions. These candidates often move because their current employer forces them to abandon deep client advisory work for digital self-service tools that limit personal interaction. We investigate this by asking candidates to describe the last time they had to choose between processing a queue and finishing a complex document packet. If a candidate says they prioritize the queue above all else, they will likely struggle with your branch requirement to balance transaction speed with product sales. If they describe a specific workflow for managing both, they demonstrate the operational discipline needed to transition into your environment successfully.
Another source includes mid-sized regional branch teams where staff feel stuck in a rigid hierarchy that prohibits them from managing their own full-cycle account compliance. A candidate may consider a move if your branch offers them the authority to see an account opening through from initial intake to final regulatory validation. We determine if your branch is a viable option for them by asking them to explain their typical process for correcting a missing signature on a file without help from a back office team. Answers indicating they wait for management intervention suggest a lack of individual accountability. Answers showing they research the correction themselves, verify the change, and follow up with the customer directly suggest they can operate within your expectations for independent document management.
- 01Avoid hiring people who claim to have universal experience but worked only on basic deposits or transfers.
- 02Do not mistake a high daily transaction count for the ability to close a product sale; these tasks require different habits.
- 03Look for people who accept responsibility for their own compliance work instead of blaming the back office for documentation errors.
03
The search in three steps
We identify branch staff who currently manage both cash and sales quotas.
We screen them for their ability to interpret banking regulations while under the pressure of a lobby queue.
We audit their prior work to confirm they maintained a consistent sales pipeline while validating every account document against anti-money laundering standards. Ask them to explain how they corrected an incomplete regulatory filing.
We map branch staff in your local area to find people who currently perform both tellering and advisory work. We run a diagnostic interview to test their knowledge of retail banking regulations and their handling of customer service complaints. We deliver only the profiles of people who can manage their own compliance workflow while meeting branch production goals.
How your Universal Banker search runs
How does The Six-Step Search work?
One sequence, from a well-defined seat to a shortlist you can judge.
Search Calibration
We start with a call about the seat, the books, the owners and the people the hire will work with. We learn what the role must fix in the first year and what would make a candidate wrong even if the resume looks right.
You get: A written search brief: scope, must-haves, deal-breakers and the pay range, agreed with you.
Market Mapping
We map the companies and institutions where the right people already work: similar size, similar ownership, similar complexity, in your market and in others.
You get: The target list of companies and institutions we will search, reviewed with you before outreach.
Professional Contact Intelligence
We find direct ways to reach the people on the map. Most are employed and not reading job boards, so reaching them takes real research.
You get: Direct routes to people who are not on job boards, researched for your search.
Persistent Personalized Outreach
We call and write to people individually and follow up. Interest varies, so we discuss the actual opportunity rather than promising a particular response.
You get: One-to-one conversations about your actual role, followed up, never a mass email blast.
Live Candidate Qualification
We speak with every candidate before you do. We check scope, systems, reporting lines, compensation expectations, location and why they would move.
You get: Only candidates we have spoken with, checked on scope, systems, pay, location and motive.
Candidate Intelligence and Process Support
You receive a short written brief on each finalist covering what they have done, where they are thin and what they want. Then we help with interviews, references and the offer.
You get: A short written brief on each finalist, plus help with interviews, references, counteroffer risk and the offer.
Questions people ask
What is the anticipated wait time for a shortlist of qualified candidates?
We provide profiles based on your specific branch requirements rather than speed. We send you the first list of qualified applicants after we complete our initial search and screening phase.
How do you determine if a candidate has the right temperament for our specific branch?
We ask how they handled specific past situations involving frustrated customers or heavy lobby traffic. Their answers tell us if they possess the patience needed to manage your specific branch volume.
How do you handle a scenario where our top pick is presented with a counteroffer?
We identify their real reasons for leaving during our first few conversations. This allows us to prepare them to decline a counteroffer before they even reach your interview stage.
Is this search strictly confidential?
We do not reveal your company name until we confirm the candidate meets your requirements. We discuss your branch with them only after verifying their interest in a new role.
What is the fee arrangement for hiring through this process?
Our fee is due only when you hire a candidate we introduce. The terms are detailed in our signed contract.
What is your guarantee?
We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.
What don't you do?
We do not post your Universal Banker job and forward whoever applies. We do not send stacks of unscreened resumes, and we do not recruit outside accounting, finance, banking and insurance.
