Divergent Recruiting Models

Organizations seeking finance talent choose between distinct engagement structures. A retained arrangement typically involves a commitment where a firm manages a search through an agreement requiring upfront payments or scheduled installments regardless of the outcome. This model emphasizes exclusivity and advisory support.

Conversely, a contingency model operates on a pay for results basis. Financial Headhunters employs this approach for permanent finance and accounting requirements. You pay only when a selected candidate accepts an offer and begins work. This distinction dictates the operational focus of the recruiters involved.

An executive search can be the right assignment when the decision is about group strategy and reporting to an ownership board. A finance function search may concern the same senior seat, or a close owner with specific consolidation experience. These are different briefs. Ask who will conduct the candidate conversation, how a technical gap will be handled and which information will be available before an interview. A buyer should not infer the working approach from a firm name or its list of offices. Compare board exposure with the actual operating responsibilities of the vacancy. Then decide which engagement fits the work you need done.

Core Operational Philosophies

Professional services firms often adopt different delivery methods. Some prioritize large team structures and broad advisory reach. Others maintain a narrow focus on specific technical functions like accounting or corporate finance. The choice between them depends on the depth of support your internal hiring team requires versus the desire for a purely performance based model.

Financial Headhunters maintains a focus on core finance roles. This specialization allows for a direct understanding of reporting lines and accounting system proficiency. We avoid the broad administrative overhead that defines larger consulting organizations. This approach keeps the search process aligned with specific hiring outcomes.

Direct Headhunting Methodologies

Effective recruiting requires identifying professionals who are not actively searching for new positions. Our process involves mapping relevant industries and researching contact paths to reach these employed individuals. This requires persistent effort to initiate conversations.

We prioritize direct outreach over automated database matching or simple job board postings. By engaging passive talent, we increase the probability of finding a candidate with the specific technical experience necessary for your finance team. This work precedes any candidate presentation.

Qualification and Candidate Briefing

A title does not confirm responsibility. Our team investigates the actual work performed by each prospect. We assess ownership of financial statements, team management duties and software experience. This qualification occurs before we suggest a candidate for your review.

We provide a written brief with the people we present. It covers what they do now, why they are considering a move and the responsibilities discussed with them. We ask about compensation expectations rather than treating their current pay as the price of the move. Before you interview, we also check whether they expect support or decision authority that your open role does not provide.

Evaluating Fee and Payment Structures

Every firm establishes its own commercial terms. Retained agreements often include fixed fee schedules and specific expense provisions. Reviewing these terms is necessary to understand your financial obligation if a search is cancelled or paused.

Our model at Financial Headhunters eliminates upfront costs. The payment terms are clear and tied to a successful hire. When you review proposals, compare the total cost structure and the point at which your obligation to pay arises. Transparency in these agreements prevents confusion during the hiring cycle.

Handling Temporary and Interim Needs

Permanent search requirements differ from temporary or fractional needs. While some firms offer a full range of consulting services, others separate these functions to maintain focus. Understanding which firm provides the correct support for your specific timeline is important.

Permanent placement on contingency is our main model. Defined contract needs are considered on request, with scope and terms set for the engagement. Interim or fractional executive leadership goes to our sister firm, Interim Executives. We ask which need you have before recommending a route. A person joining your payroll to own the finance function is a different brief from executive support for a defined project.

Selecting the Proper Partner

The decision to partner with a recruiter should rest on the firm’s ability to execute a search that fits your business. Evaluate whether the firm understands your reporting structure and industry demands. A good recruiter acts as an extension of your own hiring process.

Invite firms to explain their specific methodology for your opening. Ask about the people performing the work, their process for approaching talent and the specifics of the contract. Financial Headhunters remains available to discuss your current finance openings and determine if our contingency model aligns with your hiring objectives.

How your Finance or accounting role search runs

How does The Six-Step Search work?

One sequence, from a well-defined seat to a shortlist you can judge.

  1. Search Calibration

We start with a call about the seat, the books, the owners and the people the hire will work with. We learn what the role must fix in the first year and what would make a candidate wrong even if the resume looks right.

You get: A written search brief: scope, must-haves, deal-breakers and the pay range, agreed with you.

  2. Market Mapping

We map the companies and institutions where the right people already work: similar size, similar ownership, similar complexity, in your market and in others.

You get: The target list of companies and institutions we will search, reviewed with you before outreach.

  3. Professional Contact Intelligence

We find direct ways to reach the people on the map. Most are employed and not reading job boards, so reaching them takes real research.

You get: Direct routes to people who are not on job boards, researched for your search.

  4. Persistent Personalized Outreach

We call and write to people individually and follow up. Interest varies, so we discuss the actual opportunity rather than promising a particular response.

You get: One-to-one conversations about your actual role, followed up, never a mass email blast.

  5. Live Candidate Qualification

We speak with every candidate before you do. We check scope, systems, reporting lines, compensation expectations, location and why they would move.

You get: Only candidates we have spoken with, checked on scope, systems, pay, location and motive.

  6. Candidate Intelligence and Process Support

You receive a short written brief on each finalist covering what they have done, where they are thin and what they want. Then we help with interviews, references and the offer.

You get: A short written brief on each finalist, plus help with interviews, references, counteroffer risk and the offer.

Questions about choosing a search model

When might an employer choose a retained assignment?

A broader leadership assignment may call for a separately agreed search scope. That is different from assuming that every senior title needs one particular payment model. Discuss the responsibilities, confidentiality and expected employer participation before comparing signed terms.

Does a senior title change our default fee model?

A CFO opening does not by itself change Financial Headhunters' permanent contingency model. Any different arrangement must be discussed and set in the agreement.

How soon will I see a Finance or accounting role shortlist?

It depends on the seat, the location and the pay. We give you an honest read after the calibration call and we do not promise dates we cannot control.

What about counteroffers on a Finance or accounting role hire?

We ask every Finance or accounting role candidate early why they would move and what their employer might do to keep them. Counteroffer risk goes in the written brief before you make an offer.

    What is your guarantee?

We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.

    What don't you do?

We do not post your Finance or accounting role job and forward whoever applies. We do not send stacks of unscreened resumes, and we do not recruit outside accounting, finance, banking and insurance.
