What does this hire really come down to?
Your financial records require a person who treats the trial balance as a set of proof points. When entries are incorrectly coded, you lose track of margins and cash flow. We find people who check data entry against bank statements and invoices to verify accuracy.
Ask if they check the general ledger against individual job costs or inventory reports when a balance looks off. If your current staff waits for the month-end close to find errors, you have a process error. We find candidates who fix discrepancies as they happen rather than waiting for an audit.
Accountants change jobs when their current employer refuses to buy necessary software, forcing them to manually maintain spreadsheets for basic reporting. We find people who have built automated workflows in their last role and want to apply those methods to your company.
02
Where do we find them?
We identify professionals in distribution and construction firms. These sectors require daily updates to cost codes and inventory quantities to keep accurate books. People in these roles manage high-volume transactional data rather than just reviewing reports.
The best candidates move when their current company refuses to upgrade software or ignores their ideas to fix recurring data entry errors. We contact people in companies with manual systems that look like yours. They change jobs to find an employer willing to pay for more effective technology.
To find accounting staff who actually reconcile books rather than just generating reports, we look at businesses where the volume of inventory or job cost line items forces staff to engage with the general ledger daily. We skip generic applicants and instead search for individuals in mid-market operations where poor software forces them to track project-level margins in separate spreadsheets. You can identify if this move is right for them by asking what specific software they advocated for in their last role to replace a manual process. If they describe a tool that automates the cross-referencing of bank statements against project invoices, it indicates they prioritize system accuracy over manual entry. We ask the candidate why they left their previous employer and what specific software tool they wanted to implement. An answer about wanting to reduce spreadsheet dependency shows they care about data integrity. If they complain about the software cost itself, our client must confirm if they are willing to budget for the specific integration tools the candidate requests or risk the hire leaving for a firm that will provide them.
When a candidate highlights their work on resolving posting errors in distribution or construction, it signals they understand how a single miscoded invoice ruins cash flow reporting. A significant tradeoff for these candidates is leaving a firm where they have significant authority over accounting processes for a smaller firm that has better data, yet lacks the automated systems they are used to. We ask them to detail a time they identified a recurring discrepancy in inventory logs and how they tracked that back to a specific invoice code. If they can explain the path from the ledger error to the source document without hesitation, they possess the logic needed for your firm. We then ask our client if they are prepared to grant this person access to change how invoices are coded at the point of entry. If the client refuses to change their current data entry workflow, this candidate will remain frustrated by the same process limitations they encountered at their previous employer. We assess if the client provides this autonomy during our search phase.
- 01We decline candidates who worked only in large firms where software automation prevents them from understanding the underlying logic of a transaction.
- 02We exclude people who changed jobs every year without showing a transition to more complex accounting duties.
- 03We ignore applicants who cannot link a single invoice coding error to a specific line item on a balance sheet.
03
The search in three steps
We check your current trial balance and bank reconciliation records to identify the exact technical errors that slow down your month-end close.
We contact individuals who have successfully cleaned up similar messy ledgers and documented the new processes for their previous employer.
We test their logic during an interview to verify they can resolve a posting error without asking for guidance every time.
How your search runs
How does The Six-Step Search work?
One sequence, from a well-defined seat to a shortlist you can judge.
Search Calibration
We start with a call about the seat, the books, the owners and the people the hire will work with. We learn what the role must fix in the first year and what would make a candidate wrong even if the resume looks right.
You get: A written search brief: scope, must-haves, deal-breakers and the pay range, agreed with you.
Market Mapping
We map the companies and institutions where the right people already work: similar size, similar ownership, similar complexity, in your market and in others.
You get: The target list of companies and institutions we will search, reviewed with you before outreach.
Professional Contact Intelligence
We find direct ways to reach the people on the map. Most are employed and not reading job boards, so reaching them takes real research.
You get: Direct routes to people who are not on job boards, researched for your search.
Persistent Personalized Outreach
We call and write to people individually and follow up. Interest varies, so we discuss the actual opportunity rather than promising a particular response.
You get: One-to-one conversations about your actual role, followed up, never a mass email blast.
Live Candidate Qualification
We speak with every candidate before you do. We check scope, systems, reporting lines, compensation expectations, location and why they would move.
You get: Only candidates we have spoken with, checked on scope, systems, pay, location and motive.
Candidate Intelligence and Process Support
You receive a short written brief on each finalist covering what they have done, where they are thin and what they want. Then we help with interviews, references and the offer.
You get: A short written brief on each finalist, plus help with interviews, references, counteroffer risk and the offer.
Questions people ask
How long after we define our accounting needs will I see candidates?
We provide the first round of profiles within one week of our audit of your financial records. We wait until we verify their software experience matches your specific needs.
How do you verify a candidate will fit with our existing culture?
We ask how they handled a supervisor who rejected their ledger reconciliation. This tells us if they stay quiet or explain the evidence behind their data.
What is your advice if a preferred candidate receives a counteroffer?
We ask them why they began looking for a new role before they accept an offer. If they prioritize a higher salary over the system improvements they claimed to want, we warn you.
Is our firm's name kept anonymous during your search?
We keep your name hidden until we verify the candidate has the specific technical skills you require. This prevents your competitors from knowing you are hiring.
Are your recruitment services strictly commission-based?
We charge a fee only when you decide to hire a person we introduce to you. All costs appear in a standard agreement we sign before the search begins.
What is the fee for a finance search?
No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. The fee and terms are agreed in writing before we start.
What is your guarantee?
We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.
What don't you do?
We do not post your finance job and forward whoever applies. We do not send stacks of unscreened resumes, and we do not recruit outside accounting, finance, banking and insurance.
