01

What does this hire really come down to?

This role manages the tax lifecycle for a manufacturing business. You need someone who translates complex production costs into tax data. Who manages the data flow between plant finance and corporate tax reporting?

Expect them to handle ASC 740 provisions while navigating inventory valuation methods. They will manage standard costing impacts on tax returns and support audits. The work is technical and tied directly to the production environment.

We ask them how they reconcile manufacturing inventory to tax basis. We test their knowledge of plant-level variance analysis. We ask them to describe a specific time they defended a tax position during an audit. If they cannot explain the tax impact of a cost accounting change, they will struggle here.

You need to define the responsibilities of this role to prevent operational gaps. When we discuss the position, we must clarify if this person manages physical inventory counts or strictly the tax reporting of inventory. If they handle standard costing, ask them to identify the specific production variances that trigger tax adjustments in their prior roles. Do not accept vague descriptions of general ledger adjustments. Ask them to walk you through a specific instance where a change in production volume shifted their deferred tax assets or liabilities. If they cannot identify the connection between production output and the effective tax rate, they lack the technical grounding for this plant-level requirement. Another critical check is the level of their involvement with the ERP system. We must know if they are front-end users who pull raw reports or back-end designers who write the queries for tax-specific data extraction. If they have only ever relied on an external consultant to build their reports, they will be unable to troubleshoot inventory tax impacts during the fast-paced close cycle. Ask them to explain the specific challenges of reconciling book and tax inventory in a manufacturing environment with multiple cost centers. A strong candidate will cite the limitations of their existing system and how they worked around those data silos to provide accurate figures for ASC 740. If they suggest that the finance team provides all the necessary data without verification, they are not suited for this level of independent responsibility. We must also verify if they have managed tax compliance in states with complex manufacturing nexus rules. Ask them to describe how they handled an apportionment issue for a site with high capital investment but low local revenue. If their experience is limited to pure service companies, they will misunderstand the tax treatment of manufacturing machinery and equipment. Do not overlook their ability to explain tax concepts to plant managers who do not have an accounting background. Ask for a specific example of how they gained the buy-in of an operations lead regarding a tax-driven change in production or inventory reporting processes. If they cannot communicate clearly with non-financial staff, their technical knowledge will be useless.

02

What do we check before you see anyone?

We scan for hands-on work with SAP, Oracle, Epicor, Plex, or Infor. We verify they held ownership of the ASC 740 provision life cycle. We confirm management of 1120 or 1065 compliance filings. We review their specific response to federal and state audit queries. We check their actual presence at plant sites. We confirm they calculate inventory valuation and standard cost impacts.

We begin by mapping your specific manufacturing cycle to the candidate background. We verify if your tax needs prioritize heavy capital investment tracking versus high-volume inventory turnover. We ask if they have audited their own system data against physical plant assets to resolve discrepancies. We assess the tradeoff between hiring someone who prefers deep analytical work versus someone who enjoys regular communication with plant operations. We ask candidates to provide specific evidence of how they balanced tax reporting deadlines while adjusting for shifting production schedules. We also confirm if they have managed tax-specific data extraction independently or relied on others.

03

Where do we find them?

We target candidates currently at manufacturing companies. We also look at mid-market CPA firms. People move because they want to own the process instead of just preparing schedules. They move when their current plant closes or when they need better systems access. We also look for those reaching the ceiling in smaller regional firms.

04

Which hiring mistakes should you watch for?

  • 01Selecting a candidate limited to service industry tax structures.
  • 02Skipping the assessment of their ability to work in a plant environment.
  • 03Prioritizing historical tenure over direct evidence of ASC 740 production.

05

The search in three steps

  • 01We screen applicants against the ERP and tax provision criteria provided.
  • 02We conduct video interviews to test their communication and technical logic.
  • 03We present the final candidates for your review and interview.

Questions people ask

Must I pay to find a manager who translates production costs into tax data?

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.

Does this role require on-site presence?

Yes, candidates must commute to the plant. Managing inventory tax and cost accounting data requires direct interaction with the facility.

How do you evaluate candidates if we use niche software?

We prioritize candidates who have direct experience with SAP, Oracle, Epicor, Plex, or Infor. We verify they have used these systems for tax-related data extraction.

What is the difference between this and a Tax Controller?

A Tax Manager focuses on tax compliance and provision accuracy. A Controller owns the broader financial statements and internal controls for the entity.

Does this role fill a permanent vacancy?

Yes, permanent contingency is our default. We can discuss contract or temp-to-perm terms if you have a specific seasonal need.

When will we meet candidates?

Timing depends on the requirements, location and pay. We discuss the likely obstacles after learning about the job and keep you informed as the search progresses.
