01

What does this hire really come down to?

Who handles healthcare reimbursement complexities without constant supervision? Who updates payer mix reports and contractual allowance projections daily? Who approves the adjustment when revenue cycle variances appear?

They spend their time reconciling Epic or Oracle Health data against actual cash receipts. They track Medicare cost report inputs and help forecast the impact of shifting patient volume. If they cannot identify why a service line margin dropped, they are not doing the job.

We ask them these three questions. Can you explain the specific difference between gross revenue and net patient service revenue in your last role? How do you isolate the impact of contractual adjustments from bad debt in a monthly report? Tell me about a time you found a discrepancy in a payer reimbursement calculation and how you resolved it.

You need to determine if a candidate understands the specific mechanics of your revenue cycle before wasting your time with interviews. Ask them to walk you through the logic of a month-end reconciliation process they personally performed. Focus your conversation on the exact point where raw charge data moves into the contractual adjustment calculation. A strong analyst identifies the specific error or logic flaw in that transition. If they describe a process that relies purely on automated system reports without manual verification of underlying clinical codes, they lack the necessary depth. Dig into how they handle discrepancies when clinical billing records fail to match the general ledger output. Does their process involve speaking directly with the clinical coding staff or do they simply force a balancing entry to resolve the variance? A candidate who does not understand the nuance of coding logic in the context of payer reimbursement will struggle to produce accurate financial projections for your leadership team. Press them on the specific data fields they pull from your ERP environment during their initial analysis. They should identify clear, logical connections between patient encounters and expected cash receipts. If they are unable to isolate the specific payer contract terms that caused a shift in margin for a primary service line, they are likely just processing data rather than managing it. Ask for a detailed example of a time they challenged an assumption made by a software report. Evaluate their answer based on their ability to explain the impact of that adjustment on the final net patient revenue figure. Look for concrete evidence of their critical thinking rather than broad descriptions of their work history or standard responsibilities. If they cannot describe the relationship between bad debt, charity care, and contractual allowances in your specific environment, they will not provide the insight needed to manage your department finances effectively.

02

What do we check before you see anyone?

We verify these six items to save your team time.

We confirm their direct experience with revenue cycle data. We test their ability to map payer contracts to clinical service codes. We assess their technical comfort with Excel beyond simple data entry. We check for prior exposure to hospital or physician group ERP systems like Epic or Oracle Health. We validate their understanding of regulatory reporting requirements. We screen for clear written communication regarding financial performance.

03

Where do we find them?

We recruit from regional hospital systems, private physician groups, and ASCs. We look for analysts who have reached a ceiling in their current finance department. They move when they seek deeper involvement in payer contract modeling or when their current system lacks the complexity to offer new growth. We also approach those in firms providing revenue cycle consulting who want to move in-house to a provider organization.

04

Which hiring mistakes should you watch for?

  • 01Hiring generalist accountants who lack specific healthcare reimbursement knowledge
  • 02Overlooking the need for technical proficiency in specific EHR or ERP systems used in healthcare
  • 03Prioritizing software certifications over the ability to explain financial variances to non-finance staff

05

The search in three steps

  • 01We define the technical requirements and EHR environment specific to your facility
  • 02We conduct interviews to test candidate logic on payer mix and contractual allowance calculations
  • 03We present finalists for your evaluation with no upfront cost

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.

How do you distinguish this analyst role from a general staff accountant?

A financial analyst in a healthcare provider setting focuses on revenue cycle metrics and payer mix. They work with contractual allowances and clinical systems, whereas general staff accountants focus on standard ledger maintenance and audit preparation.

How do you verify healthcare financial credentials?

We confirm their professional background and exposure to relevant systems like Epic or Oracle Health. We also look for industry-specific certifications like HFMA credentials to validate their domain knowledge.
