01

What does this hire really come down to?

Can the candidate isolate valuation inputs from management reporting? Who approves the adjustment between the theoretical model price and cash-basis reporting? They must defend these marks against the scrutiny of external auditors.

Expect this person to own the valuation policy and the actual execution of quarterly mark-to-market assessments. They write the memos that justify why an asset value moved during the period. They do not just copy data from spreadsheets but actively verify that the inputs follow ASC 820 requirements.

We ask them: How do you adjust for liquidity discounts in credit assets? Describe the last time an auditor challenged a valuation model you built. How do you reconcile a third-party valuation report with internal data when they do not match?

Focus your initial screening on how the candidate handles evidence. Ask for specific examples where they had to reconcile conflicting valuation inputs. If they mention using external reports, press them to explain what they did when those figures did not align with internal model outputs. A strong candidate provides clear documentation that bridges the gap between raw data and final fair value marks. Ask them to walk you through a case where an auditor questioned their specific methodology. You want to hear about their technical defense, not just a description of the final memo. Check if they have ever identified a flaw in a model after it was already in production. A qualified person admits to finding errors and outlines the manual steps they took to fix the source inputs before the reporting cycle closed. Do not accept vague answers about general oversight. Look for individuals who track the provenance of every input value used in their NAV packages.

02

What do we check before you see anyone?

We verify current familiarity with ASC 820 and fair value measurement standards. Candidates must show they have applied these rules to non-marketable assets rather than just public equities.

We confirm they have managed the inputs for waterfall and carried interest calculations because valuation errors here flow directly into partner account distribution mistakes.

We check their experience with specific tools like Investran, eFront, or Allvue. General ledger experience is not sufficient if they cannot perform a capital account roll-forward.

We test for the ability to manage the interface between internal deal teams and external auditors. They must communicate the methodology behind the marks without relying on outside consultants to explain it for them.

We verify they have performed NAV package reviews. They must show they understand how changes in asset valuation alter the final balance of investor capital accounts.

We verify they hold a CPA or equivalent accounting designation. This signifies they understand the formal reporting cycles required by standard fund administration protocols.

Before you interview anyone, we require a scope session to define your specific asset classes and reporting frequency. We ask candidates for documentation of their previous work on complex valuation inputs, specifically looking for how they documented data sources during the last audit. You face a clear trade-off between speed and deep technical knowledge. A person who acts quickly might skip verifying the underlying debt schedule, while a person who prioritizes audit protection may take longer to close a cycle. We identify which pace fits your current team structure and clarify if you need immediate production output or structural model redesign.

03

Where do we find them?

We recruit from specialized fund administrators, big-four audit firms within their valuation advisory groups, and the back-offices of established private credit or equity firms. We look for individuals ready to move when they have reached the limit of their current team's complexity or when they desire direct exposure to the investment-level data they previously only audited from the outside.

They move when their current firm stops scaling or when they seek to transition from a pure accounting role into one that requires more active judgment regarding model inputs. We also find them when they are currently operating in a broader fund controller role and want to focus specifically on the valuation vertical to build deeper technical expertise.

04

Which hiring mistakes should you watch for?

  • 01Hiring a general accountant who lacks experience with complex waterfall modeling or fair value hierarchy documentation.
  • 02Expecting a candidate to be a portfolio manager rather than a valuation specialist who focuses on data integrity and audit readiness.
  • 03Overlooking the need for technical software proficiency, assuming they will learn the nuances of fund accounting systems on the job.

05

The search in three steps

  • 01We conduct an initial technical screening of valuation methodology and accounting background.
  • 02We present candidates who have successfully defended valuation policies during prior audit cycles.
  • 03You interview the finalists to confirm their decision-making process aligns with your specific portfolio strategy.

How your Fund Valuation Manager search runs

How does The Six-Step Search work?

One sequence, from a well-defined seat to a shortlist you can judge.

  1. Search Calibration

We start with a call about the seat, the books, the owners and the people the hire will work with. We learn what the role must fix in the first year and what would make a candidate wrong even if the resume looks right.

You get: A written search brief: scope, must-haves, deal-breakers and the pay range, agreed with you.

  2. Market Mapping

We map the companies and institutions where the right people already work: similar size, similar ownership, similar complexity, in your market and in others.

You get: The target list of companies and institutions we will search, reviewed with you before outreach.

  3. Professional Contact Intelligence

We find direct ways to reach the people on the map. Most are employed and not reading job boards, so reaching them takes real research.

You get: Direct routes to people who are not on job boards, researched for your search.

  4. Persistent Personalized Outreach

We call and write to people individually and follow up. Interest varies, so we discuss the actual opportunity rather than promising a particular response.

You get: One-to-one conversations about your actual role, followed up, never a mass email blast.

  5. Live Candidate Qualification

We speak with every candidate before you do. We check scope, systems, reporting lines, compensation expectations, location and why they would move.

You get: Only candidates we have spoken with, checked on scope, systems, pay, location and motive.

  6. Candidate Intelligence and Process Support

You receive a short written brief on each finalist covering what they have done, where they are thin and what they want. Then we help with interviews, references and the offer.

You get: A short written brief on each finalist, plus help with interviews, references, counteroffer risk and the offer.

Questions people ask

Must I pay money before hiring a person who can defend our valuation model marks?

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.

How is this role different from a Fund Controller?

A Fund Controller manages the overall accounting, liquidity, and reporting lifecycle of the fund. The Valuation Manager focuses specifically on the methodology and documentation of asset pricing.

Are you providing contract or permanent staff?

Our default is permanent contingency recruitment. We can provide contract or temporary staff on request with terms agreed to per engagement.

How do you handle candidates with CPA credentials?

We verify current registration status and audit specific fund accounting or valuation projects from the past two years to check that the individual applies up to date reporting standards.

What is the fee for a Fund Valuation Manager search?

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. The fee and terms are agreed in writing before we start.

How soon will I see a Fund Valuation Manager shortlist?

It depends on the seat, the location and the pay. We give you an honest read after the calibration call and we do not promise dates we cannot control.

What about counteroffers on a Fund Valuation Manager hire?

We ask every Fund Valuation Manager candidate early why they would move and what their employer might do to keep them. Counteroffer risk goes in the written brief before you make an offer.

What is your guarantee?

We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.

What don't you do?

We do not post your Fund Valuation Manager job and forward whoever applies. We do not send stacks of unscreened resumes, and we do not recruit outside accounting, finance, banking and insurance.
