01

What does this hire really come down to?

Who approves the adjustment of bank credit facility terms? You need someone who can negotiate a credit facility while managing counterparty risk for FX and interest rate hedging. Who tracks covenant compliance and debt payments?

The work is granular. You are looking for a candidate who can move from broad market analysis to the specific mechanics of a 13-week cash forecast or covenant tracking. If they cannot explain how they moved a specific rate or negotiated a bank fee, they will struggle here.

Ask them these questions. How did you organize your last debt facility negotiation? Which banks did you choose for your hedging desk and why? When did you last switch your TMS vendor and what was the impact on your treasury results?

Define the scope by mapping their past debt issuance volume against your anticipated annual financing needs. Ask them to walk through the exact process of identifying a breach of a financial covenant in their previous role. Require them to describe the specific data points they pulled from their treasury management system to inform a recommendation on interest rate swaps. If they cannot identify the exact banking partners they utilized for international liquidity management, they are likely removed from the actual execution of these functions. Request a breakdown of how they allocated credit lines across different banking partners during a period of market volatility. Their ability to explain the reasoning behind a specific bank fee structure indicates whether they actually negotiated terms or merely managed existing ones. Test their knowledge of credit facility documentation by asking which clauses they pushed to modify during a recent amendment process. Ask them how they handled a specific technical failure during an automated cash sweep. True evidence lies in the granular details of their response. If they speak in broad theoretical terms about strategy, they lack the operational history required for this position. Focus on whether they managed the relationship with the bank and the technical systems, or if they delegated these tasks to subordinates. Determine if their experience with FX hedging was limited to routine execution or included the initial analysis and risk assessment phase. Confirm whether they have personally owned the implementation of a new TMS, including the migration of historical banking data. If they have only used the system as a front-end interface, they will be unable to handle the backend configuration demands of your infrastructure. Scrutinize their history for clear evidence of independent decision-making rather than passive compliance with corporate mandates or executive direction.

02

What do we check before you see anyone?

We verify five core areas for every candidate to save your time. We check for these specifics before we conduct interviews.

  • 01CPA or CFA status confirms baseline financial literacy for complex debt markets.
  • 02Experience with credit facility negotiation and debt market instruments is required for this level.
  • 03Direct ownership of treasury management systems like Kyriba, GTreasury, or Trovata shows technical ability.
  • 04Verification of direct bank relationships proves they can execute beyond just monitoring accounts.
  • 05History of managing FX and rate hedging programs validates their risk mitigation skills.
  • 06Review cash position reports and covenant calculations to verify daily liquidity management.

03

Where do we find them?

We source from established corporate treasury departments at large firms, international banking institutions, and investment grade organizations. We look for individuals ready for a change when their current organization lacks growth in capital markets exposure or where the TMS or banking structure has become static. We also look for those moving from high-volume cash management roles into more strategic capital markets oversight who feel limited by their current scope.

04

Which hiring mistakes should you watch for?

  • 01Hiring a candidate whose experience is limited to simple cash management without exposure to debt markets or complex hedging instruments.
  • 02Overlooking candidates who lack specific experience with modern TMS implementations, leading to friction during day-to-day operations.
  • 03Prioritizing generalized financial management skills instead of specific, hands-on experience with banking covenants and credit facilities.

05

The search in three steps

  • 01We identify candidates matching the specific debt and hedging footprint of your organization.
  • 02We screen against your required bank relationship needs and technical system proficiency.
  • 03We present only those candidates who confirm the capacity to handle your specific capital markets risks.

How your Capital Markets Director search runs

How does The Six-Step Search work?

Research, direct conversations and professional judgment, with follow-through through the offer.

  1. Search Calibration

We establish what this person must own: reporting demands, systems responsibilities, team, decision authority and first-year needs. We ask what would make an otherwise good candidate wrong for this job.

You get: An agreed search brief and a clear basis for judging fit.

  2. Market Mapping

We research relevant operating environments, not just matching titles. An owner-led business, a portfolio company and a regulated lender can need different experience from someone with the same job title.

You get: A reasoned research direction, with scope differences made explicit.

  3. Professional Contact Intelligence

We research professional ways to contact the people identified. Finding a name is a starting point; it does not establish availability, interest or fit.

You get: A route to a professional conversation, not simply a candidate list.

  4. Persistent Personalized Outreach

We contact people directly about the actual work and follow through on the conversation. We explain the remit and discuss whether a move could make sense. Not everyone will answer or want to move.

You get: A candid view of interest, objections and the tradeoffs in your opportunity.

  5. Live Candidate Qualification

We discuss what each person actually owned, the complexity involved, their reasons for considering a move, compensation expectations and practical constraints. The questions fit the assignment, from a staff accounting seat to CFO.

You get: A candidate account of relevant ownership, with gaps left visible.

  6. Candidate Intelligence and Process Support

Written recruiter context explains relevant experience, strengths and remaining questions. After introduction, we gather feedback, resolve questions, discuss changed requirements and support interviews and offer decisions. You retain the hiring decision and technical assessment.

You get: Continuity through the offer, rather than a handoff that ends at an introduction.
