01

What does this hire really come down to?

Who manages your actual currency exposure calculations? Who executes the specific trade hedging strategies? Who corrects the math when an exposure calculation is wrong?

They translate your risk policy into trades. Ask them exactly how they decide which instruments to use for a specific currency hedge. If they cannot explain the underlying cost of carry or the specific impact of a delta hedge on the P&L then they are guessing.

This person must own the relationship with your banking partners. Ask them to explain the last time they pushed back on a bank's pricing for an FX transaction. You need someone who protects your spread and holds the bank accountable.

Ask them to explain a mistake they made while executing a hedge. How did they identify the error and what was the financial impact on the company? A candidate admits the error and describes the internal control improvement they implemented to prevent a recurrence. Press them on how they reconcile bank confirmations against trade logs.

02

What do we check before you see anyone?

We verify current exposure tracking methods. We ask for a clear explanation of how they manage hedge accounting under relevant standards. We check if they have managed a TMS implementation or significant upgrade. We confirm their experience with specific FX hedging instruments like forwards or options. We assess their ability to explain hedging strategy to stakeholders who lack finance backgrounds. We check their history of managing bank platform relationships.

Before you interview a single person we conduct a detailed review of their practical trade history. We ask them to describe the exact steps taken when a hedge trade fails to clear at the expected rate. If they blame the bank platform without checking their own data input or internal system logs they lack the necessary technical care. We also ask for evidence of their work with specific complex instruments like cross currency swaps. If they cannot describe the counterparty credit risk limits they apply to these trades we move on. We also present a trade scenario where they must choose between using an expensive forward contract or accepting a larger open market risk. We grade their answer on the math they use to justify the cost relative to the risk protection. You face a hard trade off here between hiring someone who focuses purely on accounting precision versus someone who prioritizes active market negotiation. An accountant might keep your records clean but cost you thousands in missed spread optimization. A trader might get you better pricing but fail to document the hedge correctly under your accounting policies. We filter for the rare person who possesses both habits. We quiz them on how they reconcile daily trade activity against the ledger to catch discrepancies before month end close. We require them to show us how they communicate a failed hedge strategy to a board member who does not understand finance. We look for a focus on clarity and honesty rather than technical jargon. If they cannot distill the financial impact into a simple two sentence summary regarding risk and cost they will not work well with your executive team. We check if they have successfully navigated a period of intense market turbulence while maintaining accurate reporting. We look for proof of clear decision logs that show exactly why they chose a specific hedge at a specific time.

03

Where do we find them?

We look for candidates in corporate treasury departments of large multinational firms. We search for those currently working in specialized FX risk desks. We also source from banks where they managed currency liquidity and client hedge programs. Candidates move when their current treasury function offers limited autonomy to execute new hedging strategies. They also move when their current firm stops scaling or loses global complexity.

04

Which hiring mistakes should you watch for?

  • 01Selecting a candidate with only accounting experience unable to negotiate with bank desks.
  • 02Selecting a candidate who relies entirely on external consultants for hedge valuation.
  • 03Failing to verify TMS knowledge required to avoid manual workarounds.

05

The search in three steps

  • 01Map your current exposure gaps and required hedging instruments.
  • 02Interview candidates on actual trade execution and bank relationship management.
  • 03Agree on specific risk limits and reporting expectations before extending an offer.

How your Treasury Risk (FX and Hedging) Manager search runs

How does The Six-Step Search work?

One sequence, from a well-defined seat to a shortlist you can judge.

  1. Search Calibration

We start with a call about the seat, the books, the owners and the people the hire will work with. We learn what the role must fix in the first year and what would make a candidate wrong even if the resume looks right.

You get: A written search brief: scope, must-haves, deal-breakers and the pay range, agreed with you.

  2. Market Mapping

We map the companies and institutions where the right people already work: similar size, similar ownership, similar complexity, in your market and in others.

You get: The target list of companies and institutions we will search, reviewed with you before outreach.

  3. Professional Contact Intelligence

We find direct ways to reach the people on the map. Most are employed and not reading job boards, so reaching them takes real research.

You get: Direct routes to people who are not on job boards, researched for your search.

  4. Persistent Personalized Outreach

We call and write to people individually and follow up. Interest varies, so we discuss the actual opportunity rather than promising a particular response.

You get: One-to-one conversations about your actual role, followed up, never a mass email blast.

  5. Live Candidate Qualification

We speak with every candidate before you do. We check scope, systems, reporting lines, compensation expectations, location and why they would move.

You get: Only candidates we have spoken with, checked on scope, systems, pay, location and motive.

  6. Candidate Intelligence and Process Support

You receive a short written brief on each finalist covering what they have done, where they are thin and what they want. Then we help with interviews, references and the offer.

You get: A short written brief on each finalist, plus help with interviews, references, counteroffer risk and the offer.
