What does this hire really come down to?
Who approves the adjustment to the core financial narrative of your company? You need someone who converts messy operational data into clear board decks and actionable forecasts. They must own the three-statement model and keep it accurate every month.
Judgment involves knowing which business drivers actually impact cash flow versus vanity metrics. You need a person who questions department heads on their spend rather than just aggregating spreadsheets. They must force rigor into the budgeting cycle.
Ask if they built a model from scratch that led to a specific change in product strategy. Ask how they reconcile a negative variance against a sales forecast. Ask for an example of when they told leadership a plan was not financially viable.
You need a concrete answer on how to vet the candidate during the scope conversation. Stop asking about their theory on forecasting. Ask them to describe a specific time they identified a significant variance in an operational model and how they presented that finding to non-finance department heads. You need to verify if they can actually explain why the numbers shifted. Ask them to outline the specific sequence of steps they used to build an integrated three-statement model from scratch. Pay attention to how they describe the link between the cash flow statement and the balance sheet. If they cannot explain the flow between these items, they will fail to manage your reporting. Ask them to name the specific challenges they encountered during their last system implementation. Probe for details on how they handled messy data cleaning or internal resistance to new budgeting processes. You want a person who admits where the system failed and explains how they corrected the logic. Do not accept broad claims of process improvement. Ask for the specific metrics they improved and how they measured the accuracy of their forecasts against reality. Ask if they have ever rejected a budget request from a department head based on their financial modeling. Listen for how they handled that conflict. You need someone who stands their ground when the numbers do not add up. If they mention using Power BI or SQL, ask for the exact type of data sets they queried and the limitations they encountered with existing systems. This reveals if they truly understand the data or if they rely on others to pull reports for them. Finally, ask what specific changes they made to the board deck reporting process to better reflect the business strategy. Focus on how they translate abstract financial data into concrete operational insights.
- 01Verify their proficiency with Adaptive, Anaplan, Pigment, or OneStream through live system walkthroughs.
- 02Check that their three-statement modeling includes integrated cash flow and balance sheet logic.
- 03Confirm they have owned the board deck preparation process from start to finish.
- 04Test for SQL or Power BI fluency to see if they can query data without IT intervention.
- 05Assess their ability to explain complex variances to non-finance stakeholders clearly.
- 06Check their track record of implementing or upgrading EPM tools.

Where do we find them?
We source from other finance teams in high-growth companies that operate on similar EPM stacks. We also look at consultants from boutique firms who have transitioned into internal corporate finance roles. We target professionals who have survived at least two complete annual planning cycles in a single organization.
Candidates often look to move when their current company faces a stale forecasting process or a lack of new financial system investment. They want roles where they can influence strategy rather than just closing the books. They also move for roles with broader access to the executive team and board of directors.
- 01Over-valuing complex modeling at the expense of business communication.
- 02Failing to understand the operational drivers behind the financial results.
- 03Inability to work with non-finance department leaders to get accurate inputs.
03
The search in three steps
We agree on the specific EPM tool and modeling requirements for your current stack.
We filter candidates for direct experience in board deck creation and driver-based forecasting.
We present candidates who have successfully managed a budget cycle and variance analysis.
- 01Define technical requirements and EPM needs.
- 02Screen for model ownership and reporting experience.
- 03Present candidates with documented experience in your sector.
How your Strategic Finance Manager search runs
How does The Six-Step Search work?
Research, direct conversations and professional judgment, with follow-through through the offer.
Search Calibration
We establish what this person must own: reporting demands, systems responsibilities, team, decision authority and first-year needs. We ask what would make an otherwise good candidate wrong for this job.
You get: An agreed search brief and a clear basis for judging fit.
Market Mapping
We research relevant operating environments, not just matching titles. An owner-led business, a portfolio company and a regulated lender can need different experience from someone with the same job title.
You get: A reasoned research direction, with scope differences made explicit.
Professional Contact Intelligence
We research professional ways to contact the people identified. Finding a name is a starting point; it does not establish availability, interest or fit.
You get: A route to a professional conversation, not simply a candidate list.
Persistent Personalized Outreach
We contact people directly about the actual work and follow through on the conversation. We explain the remit and discuss whether a move could make sense. Not everyone will answer or want to move.
You get: A candid view of interest, objections and the tradeoffs in your opportunity.
Live Candidate Qualification
We discuss what each person actually owned, the complexity involved, their reasons for considering a move, compensation expectations and practical constraints. The questions fit the assignment, from a staff accounting seat to CFO.
You get: A candidate account of relevant ownership, with gaps left visible.
Candidate Intelligence and Process Support
Written recruiter context explains relevant experience, strengths and remaining questions. After introduction, we gather feedback, resolve questions, discuss changed requirements and support interviews and offer decisions. You retain the hiring decision and technical assessment.
You get: Continuity through the offer, rather than a handoff that ends at an introduction.
Questions people ask
Must I pay upfront for finding someone who manages board decks and three-statement models?
No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.
How do you confirm technical skills?
We check that they have documented experience using systems like Adaptive or Anaplan. We prioritize those who have led EPM implementations.
What is the difference between this and an FP&A Manager?
A Strategic Finance Manager typically handles more investor relations and capital allocation tasks. An FP&A Manager focuses more on the monthly close and budget variance.
Can this role be remote?
Remote staff must provide examples of tasks managed without local oversight. We assess their history of using digital collaboration tools to update offsite managers on project status.
What is the policy for hiring adjustments?
If a candidate leaves or is terminated within a short period, we provide a replacement search without additional professional fees.
What is the fee for a Strategic Finance Manager search?
No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. The fee and terms are agreed in writing before we start.
How soon will I see a Strategic Finance Manager shortlist?
It depends on the seat, the location and the pay. We give you an honest read after the calibration call and we do not promise dates we cannot control.
What about counteroffers on a Strategic Finance Manager hire?
We ask every Strategic Finance Manager candidate early why they would move and what their employer might do to keep them. Counteroffer risk goes in the written brief before you make an offer.
What is your guarantee?
We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.
What don't you do?
We do not post your Strategic Finance Manager job and forward whoever applies. We do not send stacks of unscreened resumes, and we do not recruit outside accounting, finance, banking and insurance.
