01

What does this hire really come down to?

You need someone who decides coverage based on policy terms. They must read a policy and know if a loss is covered or excluded instantly. Who approves the adjustment if the claim requires a settlement beyond standard limits?

They write the initial loss report and handle the negotiation directly with the insured or legal counsel. They manage the file diary so nothing sits idle. If a file stalls, the loss grows. They must close cases based on the facts provided.

Ask them: How do you handle a claimant who disagrees with your coverage denial? Which specific policy exclusions have you used most this year? What do you do when the physical damage report does not match the loss description provided by the insured?

You must define the exact policy language complexity expected during our first scope call. Do not just ask if they have property experience. Ask specifically if they have handled primary versus excess layers for political violence or utility claims. You need to verify if the candidate understands the difference between a standard fire loss and a complex terror event under a specific policy form. Ask them to walk you through the last three complex indemnity claims they closed. Focus on the evidence they collected to justify the settlement amount. If they cannot produce a clear trail of documentation that connects the physical damage report to the policy exclusion, they are not a fit. Ask specifically how they gather evidence when the insured provides conflicting narratives regarding the cause of loss. Listen for their ability to cite specific clauses that triggered their coverage position. If they lean on supervisor input to draft these responses, move to the next candidate. We need to define if this role requires independent interaction with legal counsel or if they primarily manage files within internal guidelines. Clarify the software environment early. Does your team use specific valuation tools that require prior training? If they have not used these tools, the ramp time will impact your output. We also need to agree on the depth of litigation experience required. Do they need to manage active subrogation files or just monitor legal activity? Defining these constraints now prevents wasted interviews. I need you to commit to the specific regulatory licenses required for this desk before we start. Relying on general licenses creates delays when files arrive from restricted regions. Do not compromise on the authority levels. If this role requires total settlement discretion, we must filter out anyone who has historically functioned in an assistant capacity. Test their decision logic by presenting a gray area claim during the interview. Watch how they weigh policy wording against the facts.

02

What do we check before you see anyone?

We verify these six items before presenting any candidate to you.

  • 01State adjuster licensing requirements for the jurisdictions where they manage claims.
  • 02Experience using Xactimate or similar property estimation software for structural damage.
  • 03Direct handling of the specific lines of business you require, such as property or political violence.
  • 04Ability to produce a written claim denial letter that holds up against formal grievances.
  • 05History of managing complex litigation or subrogation matters involving third party vendors.
  • 06Standard industry designations like AIC to confirm they know basic claims law and ethics.

03

Where do we find them?

We look at mid-market carrier adjusters who want more authority than their current desk allows. We also target agency claims advocates who understand the carrier side. We approach independent adjusting firms where contractors want steady desk work instead of field travel.

They move if their current firm limits their authority to sub-ten thousand dollar losses. They move if the claims volume makes it impossible to investigate files properly. They move if the internal software is so dated it prevents them from finishing their daily work.

04

Which hiring mistakes should you watch for?

Avoid these common errors during your search.

  • 01Hiring a field adjuster for a desk role when they lack the necessary file management experience.
  • 02Confusing years of administrative claims processing with actual independent decision authority.
  • 03Overlooking the need for specific regional license knowledge in favor of general industry experience.

05

The search in three steps

Follow this process to identify and hire your next adjuster.

  • 01Confirm the specific policy types and technical software requirements for your open desk.
  • 02Interview candidates on actual case files they managed rather than general hypothetical situations.
  • 03Finalize an offer contingent on standard background checks once you select your preferred candidate.

How your Senior Claims Adjuster search runs

How does The Six-Step Search work?

Research, direct conversations and professional judgment, with follow-through through the offer.

  1. Search Calibration

We establish what this person must own: reporting demands, systems responsibilities, team, decision authority and first-year needs. We ask what would make an otherwise good candidate wrong for this job.

You get: An agreed search brief and a clear basis for judging fit.

  2. Market Mapping

We research relevant operating environments, not just matching titles. An owner-led business, a portfolio company and a regulated lender can need different experience from someone with the same job title.

You get: A reasoned research direction, with scope differences made explicit.

  3. Professional Contact Intelligence

We research professional ways to contact the people identified. Finding a name is a starting point; it does not establish availability, interest or fit.

You get: A route to a professional conversation, not simply a candidate list.

  4. Persistent Personalized Outreach

We contact people directly about the actual work and follow through on the conversation. We explain the remit and discuss whether a move could make sense. Not everyone will answer or want to move.

You get: A candid view of interest, objections and the tradeoffs in your opportunity.

  5. Live Candidate Qualification

We discuss what each person actually owned, the complexity involved, their reasons for considering a move, compensation expectations and practical constraints. The questions fit the assignment, from a staff accounting seat to CFO.

You get: A candidate account of relevant ownership, with gaps left visible.

  6. Candidate Intelligence and Process Support

Written recruiter context explains relevant experience, strengths and remaining questions. After introduction, we gather feedback, resolve questions, discuss changed requirements and support interviews and offer decisions. You retain the hiring decision and technical assessment.

You get: Continuity through the offer, rather than a handoff that ends at an introduction.

Questions people ask

Do I pay a fee now to find an adjuster who interprets policy coverage?

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.

What is the difference between this and a junior adjuster role?

A senior adjuster carries full decision rights on coverage and settlement authority for high-value claims. A junior role requires supervisor approval for most decisions.

Can you find a bilingual adjuster for this role?

Yes, we screen for specific language fluency as a core requirement during our initial outreach. Please provide the primary languages required for your claimant base.

Is this a temporary or permanent hire?

Permanent contingency is the default engagement. We can discuss contract or temp-to-perm arrangements if your specific volume demands it.

How soon will I see a Senior Claims Adjuster shortlist?

It depends on the seat, the location and the pay. We give you an honest read after the calibration call and we do not promise dates we cannot control.

What about counteroffers on a Senior Claims Adjuster hire?

We ask every Senior Claims Adjuster candidate early why they would move and what their employer might do to keep them. Counteroffer risk goes in the written brief before you make an offer.

What is your guarantee?

We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.

What don't you do?

We do not post your Senior Claims Adjuster job and forward whoever applies. We do not send stacks of unscreened resumes, and we do not recruit outside accounting, finance, banking and insurance.
