01
What does this hire really come down to?
You need a person who manages a client book. They manage client assets and discuss investment performance. This role requires adjusting portfolio allocations and scheduling client withdrawals.
Judgment is critical here. Can they assess risk versus reward for specific family estates? Do they know when to pull in specialists for tax or trust matters? You need someone who executes strategy without hand-holding.
Ask these questions: What transition steps were taken for the five largest clients? What is the standard approach for securities-based lending? How was the conflict resolved when market outlook differed from the firm model?
Define scope by examining the link between current client book size and firm support limits. Forget titles; investigate specific portfolio construction methods used for ultra high net worth families. Ask how they compute cash flow for concentrated stock holdings. Require proof of personal execution in estate planning workflows rather than delegation. A candidate unable to recount their primary acquisition method will struggle. Inquire how they resolve compliance tension when client goals conflict with standard models. Verify if they understand the administrative weight of their own accounts. If they rely on a large back office for basic trading, they may not meet your requirements for this seat. Test their depth on tax harvesting and trust structures using a hypothetical liquidity event for a family firm. Watch if they apply specific tax and succession planning variables or simply quote a prepackaged strategy. Seek signs they view trust documents as a primary preservation tool. Ask how they resolve disputes with internal investment committees without relying on firm rules. Inquire if securities-based lending is a standard solution or a last-resort. Ask how they transition accounts during market swings. We search for someone who balances portfolio returns with tax and estate realities. Check their accuracy regarding current wealth transfer regulations. Differentiate between basic advice and complex fiduciary duty. Require proof of their technical method.
02
What do we check before you see anyone?
We verify license status and disciplinary history via BrokerCheck. We assess the portability of their AUM versus contract restrictions. We confirm experience with HNW lending products. We check their grasp of CFA or CFP principles. We audit their history of cross-selling deposit products. We vet their experience working with internal investment committees.
Before you review any profiles, we hold a scope conversation to map your current operational reality against the candidate profile. We isolate whether your firm expects an advisor to manage daily trade execution or if they act primarily as a client facing relationship owner who delegates to internal teams. During our vetting, we ask candidates to walk us through their exact workflow when managing a tax loss harvesting cycle for five different tax brackets simultaneously. We press them on how they reconcile a client requesting a high risk asset allocation that sits outside your house model. We look for the trade-off they make between spending time on new client acquisition versus deep account maintenance. We ask them to describe the last time they had to decline a client request due to fiduciary constraints and how they managed the resulting tension. We confirm their past involvement in specific estate planning activities by asking them to detail the last three legal documents they reviewed for client transition planning. We check if they possess the depth to identify a need for grantor trusts or family limited partnerships without guidance from an attorney. By requiring them to explain these mechanics, we reveal whether they have personally managed complex accounts or merely acted as a point of contact for a larger team.
03
Where do we find them?
We target advisors at regional bank trust departments and independent wealth firms. We look for candidates who hit a ceiling at their current institution regarding local decision rights or administrative overhead. These people move when their book reaches a size where their support needs outpace their current firm’s capacity.
04
Which hiring mistakes should you watch for?
- 01Hiring a generalist when your book requires specific trust or complex lending knowledge.
- 02Ignoring the actual transferability of assets under existing non-solicit agreements.
- 03Overlooking a candidate who lacks the ability to manage small teams or administrative staff.
05
The search in three steps
- 01We identify advisors with valid Series 7, 66, or 65 credentials currently handling high net worth portfolios.
- 02We screen for documented AUM growth and verified technical command of trust administration.
- 03We present vetted individuals who fit your firm's specific investment philosophy and client profile.
How your Senior Wealth Advisor search runs
How does The Six-Step Search work?
One sequence, from a well-defined seat to a shortlist you can judge.
Search Calibration
We start with a call about the seat, the books, the owners and the people the hire will work with. We learn what the role must fix in the first year and what would make a candidate wrong even if the resume looks right.
You get: A written search brief: scope, must-haves, deal-breakers and the pay range, agreed with you.
Market Mapping
We map the companies and institutions where the right people already work: similar size, similar ownership, similar complexity, in your market and in others.
You get: The target list of companies and institutions we will search, reviewed with you before outreach.
Professional Contact Intelligence
We find direct ways to reach the people on the map. Most are employed and not reading job boards, so reaching them takes real research.
You get: Direct routes to people who are not on job boards, researched for your search.
Persistent Personalized Outreach
We call and write to people individually and follow up. Interest varies, so we discuss the actual opportunity rather than promising a particular response.
You get: One-to-one conversations about your actual role, followed up, never a mass email blast.
Live Candidate Qualification
We speak with every candidate before you do. We check scope, systems, reporting lines, compensation expectations, location and why they would move.
You get: Only candidates we have spoken with, checked on scope, systems, pay, location and motive.
Candidate Intelligence and Process Support
You receive a short written brief on each finalist covering what they have done, where they are thin and what they want. Then we help with interviews, references and the offer.
