01
What does this hire really come down to?
This role requires managing the month-end close independently. You need a person who converts raw billing data into GAAP statements. They must handle multi-element revenue arrangements for software subscriptions.
Expect this person to own the balance sheet reconciliations and the PBC list for external audits. You are paying for a technician who identifies errors in the ledger before they reach the trial balance stage. They should demonstrate deep proficiency in the specific ERP modules used for SaaS operations.
We ask candidates these three questions during our initial screen. Describe your specific workflow for revenue recognition under ASC 606 for complex bundles. How do you reconcile deferred revenue against your billing platform data? Explain how you handled a significant discrepancy discovered during an audit and what steps you took to prevent a recurrence.
Scope calls determine if a candidate handles the full lifecycle of your month-end close. We verify if they own the ledger rather than just completing assigned journals. Ask for evidence on how they managed the bridge between billing platforms and accounting software. If they cannot explain the data flow, they will struggle with your reconciliations. We specifically screen for their ability to explain the transition from cash to accrual for subscriptions. A common issue is a candidate who records revenue but lacks the operational context to investigate variances in deferred revenue accounts. Demand a walkthrough of their process for finding missing or inaccurate invoices during the close. If they rely only on automated reports, ask how they validate the integrity of the underlying data source. We require evidence that they know how to handle multi-element arrangements where performance obligations are met over time. If their experience is limited to simple subscription models, they will fail to capture nuances of professional services bundled with software licenses. Inquire about their involvement with audit PBC lists during previous busy seasons. Ask for a list of specific schedules they prepared and the feedback they received from auditors regarding their documentation. A candidate who simply states they provided support is insufficient. We look for those who reorganized or improved the audit file structure to speed up review times. These technicians must show they understand ASC 718 requirements. If they lack this knowledge, they will require excessive training on your equity accounting. Focus on their technical errors in past roles and how they fixed them. Do not accept generalities. If they cannot provide a concrete example of a technical correction they initiated, they do not have the autonomy your team requires.

What do we check before you see anyone?
We verify these six items before presenting any profile for your review.
We start with a scope conversation regarding your current close timeline and the specific gaps in your existing ledger. We ask candidates to provide physical evidence of their past reconciliations, such as redacted work papers that demonstrate how they mapped billing software outputs to general ledger journals. One common hiring tradeoff involves choosing between a candidate who knows the ASC 606 rulebook conceptually versus one who has actually fixed broken revenue recognition in a live ERP environment. We prioritize those who describe how they cleaned up messy data imports rather than those who only speak in abstract compliance theory.
- 01Direct experience with ASC 606 revenue recognition for subscription contracts.
- 02Hands-on proficiency with NetSuite or Sage Intacct specifically for SaaS billing.
- 03Technical understanding of ASC 718 requirements for stock-based compensation.
- 04Demonstrated history of managing the full monthly close cycle in a growth stage environment.
- 05Practical ability to calculate and reconcile recurring revenue metrics.
- 06Verification of CPA status or active pursuit of the certification for qualified candidates.
03
Where do we find them?
We search within accounting departments of venture-backed software firms and mid-sized SaaS providers. We look for individuals currently serving as staff or senior accountants who have hit a ceiling in their current firm regarding exposure to complex technical accounting. These candidates often move because their current employer has slowed its growth or they lack mentorship from a controller who specializes in SaaS technical requirements.
04
Which hiring mistakes should you watch for?
- 01Hiring a candidate who only understands standard manufacturing accounting without specific software subscription revenue experience.
- 02Overlooking the need for deep ERP system skills in favor of general ledger knowledge alone.
- 03Ignoring the lack of audit preparation experience which delays the year-end timeline.
05
The search in three steps
- 01We audit the market for candidates with direct SaaS and ASC 606 experience.
- 02We conduct a technical screening to test revenue recognition and ERP functionality.
- 03We present the shortlisted individuals who meet your specific technical and timeline constraints.

How your Senior Accountant search runs
How does The Six-Step Search work?
One sequence, from a well-defined seat to a shortlist you can judge.
Search Calibration
We start with a call about the seat, the books, the owners and the people the hire will work with. We learn what the role must fix in the first year and what would make a candidate wrong even if the resume looks right.
You get: A written search brief: scope, must-haves, deal-breakers and the pay range, agreed with you.
Market Mapping
We map the companies and institutions where the right people already work: similar size, similar ownership, similar complexity, in your market and in others.
You get: The target list of companies and institutions we will search, reviewed with you before outreach.
Professional Contact Intelligence
We find direct ways to reach the people on the map. Most are employed and not reading job boards, so reaching them takes real research.
You get: Direct routes to people who are not on job boards, researched for your search.
Persistent Personalized Outreach
We call and write to people individually and follow up. Interest varies, so we discuss the actual opportunity rather than promising a particular response.
You get: One-to-one conversations about your actual role, followed up, never a mass email blast.
Live Candidate Qualification
We speak with every candidate before you do. We check scope, systems, reporting lines, compensation expectations, location and why they would move.
You get: Only candidates we have spoken with, checked on scope, systems, pay, location and motive.
Candidate Intelligence and Process Support
You receive a short written brief on each finalist covering what they have done, where they are thin and what they want. Then we help with interviews, references and the offer.
You get: A short written brief on each finalist, plus help with interviews, references, counteroffer risk and the offer.
Questions people ask
Is there a cost to find an accountant who manages SaaS revenue recognition?
No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.
How do you distinguish a Senior Accountant from a Controller?
A Senior Accountant focuses on transaction processing, reconciliations, and closing steps. A Controller holds decision-making authority over accounting policy, tax strategy, and audit relationships.
How do you handle candidates who need to relocate or work remotely?
We look for accountants who managed remote close processes previously. We check for prior experience balancing decentralized finance team workflows without daily supervision.
What happens if I need a temporary worker instead of a permanent hire?
We can provide contract or temporary support on request. Terms for these engagements are agreed upon separately for each assignment.
How soon will I see a Senior Accountant shortlist?
It depends on the seat, the location and the pay. We give you an honest read after the calibration call and we do not promise dates we cannot control.
What about counteroffers on a Senior Accountant hire?
We ask every Senior Accountant candidate early why they would move and what their employer might do to keep them. Counteroffer risk goes in the written brief before you make an offer.
What is your guarantee?
We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.
What don't you do?
We do not post your Senior Accountant job and forward whoever applies. We do not send stacks of unscreened resumes, and we do not recruit outside accounting, finance, banking and insurance.
