01

What does this hire really come down to?

A ledger can balance while a prepaid schedule still carries items that should have cleared. You need someone who follows the balance back to its support, asks why it is still there and brings the proposed correction to the right reviewer. Posting an entry is only part of the work. Owning the account means explaining what changed and what remains unresolved.

We ask which accounts this person will own. A ledger-focused seat may handle accruals, fixed assets and reconciliations while another team processes invoices and receipts. A full-cycle staff accountant may do all of that. Employers sometimes use the titles interchangeably, so the task boundaries matter more than the wording on a resume.

The controller should not have to reconstruct the schedule after every close. Walk me through an adjustment you prepared, the support used, and the questions your reviewer raised. The useful answer follows the transaction into the accounts. A description of the accounting software alone does not tell you who made the decision.

02

What do we check before you see anyone?

An accrual walkthrough exposes the difference between following a checklist and owning an account. We ask what happened when an invoice arrived after the entry was posted. Did the candidate match it to the accrual, explain the difference and check the reversal? We also ask who approved the treatment. Preparing an entry does not mean having authority to set accounting policy.

  • 01Journal entrieswhat support was attached, who reviewed it and how the candidate caught a duplicate or incorrect account before posting.
  • 02Reconciliationshow the candidate separated a timing item from an error and kept an unresolved difference visible rather than plugging it.
  • 03Cutoffhow receipt dates, service periods and invoice dates affected the proposed entry, with the controller deciding disputed policy questions.
  • 04Prepaid and fixed asset schedules: how additions, expense recognition and disposals tied back to the ledger and supporting records.
  • 05Close explanationshow the candidate traced an unexpected movement and wrote an explanation that the reviewer could follow.
  • 06System ownershipwhich reports, posting permissions and recurring templates the candidate actually used, not just which ERP appeared on the resume.

03

Where do we find them?

Corporate close teams are a useful starting point when the role needs account ownership without responsibility for the whole department. Shared services accountants may bring reconciliation experience, but we ask where their process ended and who resolved exceptions. Audit associates moving into industry need a separate conversation about preparing entries rather than testing entries prepared by someone else.

A person might consider your role because it offers named accounts to own, access to the reviewer or a clearer path beyond repetitive posting. We ask what they want to change before presenting the opportunity. If your seat includes invoice processing as well as close work, we say that plainly instead of selling it as a reporting-only job.

04

Which hiring mistakes should you watch for?

  • 01Hiring from an ERP keyword without asking which schedules and entries the person owned inside that system.
  • 02Treating unresolved differences as minor without checking whether the same items return at each close.
  • 03Expecting the new accountant to set policy when the job description gives them preparation responsibility but no approval authority.

05

The search in three steps

  • 01Define the accounts, close handoffs and reviewer. We also separate ledger work from transaction processing that belongs to another seat.
  • 02Approach people doing comparable work and qualify their account ownership, system experience and reason for considering a move.
  • 03Present the relevant evidence and open questions, then support interviews, offer discussions and the handoff into the team.

How your General Ledger Accountant search runs

How does The Six-Step Search work?

One sequence, from a well-defined seat to a shortlist you can judge.

  1. Search Calibration

We start with a call about the seat, the books, the owners and the people the hire will work with. We learn what the role must fix in the first year and what would make a candidate wrong even if the resume looks right.

You get: A written search brief: scope, must-haves, deal-breakers and the pay range, agreed with you.

  2. Market Mapping

We map the companies and institutions where the right people already work: similar size, similar ownership, similar complexity, in your market and in others.

You get: The target list of companies and institutions we will search, reviewed with you before outreach.

  3. Professional Contact Intelligence

We find direct ways to reach the people on the map. Most are employed and not reading job boards, so reaching them takes real research.

You get: Direct routes to people who are not on job boards, researched for your search.

  4. Persistent Personalized Outreach

We call and write to people individually and follow up. Interest varies, so we discuss the actual opportunity rather than promising a particular response.

You get: One-to-one conversations about your actual role, followed up, never a mass email blast.

  5. Live Candidate Qualification

We speak with every candidate before you do. We check scope, systems, reporting lines, compensation expectations, location and why they would move.

You get: Only candidates we have spoken with, checked on scope, systems, pay, location and motive.

  6. Candidate Intelligence and Process Support

You receive a short written brief on each finalist covering what they have done, where they are thin and what they want. Then we help with interviews, references and the offer.

You get: A short written brief on each finalist, plus help with interviews, references, counteroffer risk and the offer.

Questions people ask

Is this the same as a staff accountant?

Sometimes it is. We use this page for the ledger-focused version of the seat, while a full-cycle staff accountant may also handle payable and receivable transactions. We clarify the division before starting outreach.

How soon will we see a shortlist?

That depends on the account scope, work location and what would make the role worth considering. We agree on the search priorities first and explain what we are finding rather than promise a date before speaking to the market.

What happens if a candidate receives a counteroffer?

We ask why the person is considering leaving and what could change that decision. A pay adjustment may solve their concern, or it may leave the original reporting and workload problems untouched.

Can someone from audit do this work?

Possibly, but testing a reconciliation is different from preparing and maintaining it. We ask what entries and schedules they have owned directly and identify the training your reviewer would need to provide.

When do we pay for the search?

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.

What is the fee for a General Ledger Accountant search?

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. The fee and terms are agreed in writing before we start.

What is your guarantee?

We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.

What don't you do?

We do not post your General Ledger Accountant job and forward whoever applies. We do not send stacks of unscreened resumes, and we do not recruit outside accounting, finance, banking and insurance.
