01

What does this hire really come down to?

Who approves the adjustment to lease discount rates? How do you confirm lease entries match payment outflows? They must manage the lifecycle of lease data within your ERP system daily.

The work is granular. They track commencement dates, renewals, and modifications while calculating right-of-use assets and lease liabilities. They must own the reconciliation process between sub-ledgers and the general ledger to satisfy audit requirements.

Ask them specifically how they handled a modification under ASC 842. How did they determine the discount rate for a lease? What specific software controls do they use to track lease payments against actual cash outflows?

You need to qualify a candidate by digging into their actual work on lease accounting. Start the scope conversation by asking them to walk you through the very first lease they transitioned to ASC 842. Do not let them give you a summary of the standard. Ask them to explain the specific inputs they used to calculate the initial right of use asset. Ask how they determined the incremental borrowing rate for a lease that lacked an implicit rate. If they mention using a spreadsheet or a specific ERP module, ask them what happens when a lease modification occurs halfway through the fiscal year. You need to hear exactly how they adjusted the liability and the asset balance. If they stumble here, they have not done the work themselves. Ask them about their role in the audit process. Do not accept vague statements about working with auditors. Ask them to describe a specific audit deficiency they received regarding lease disclosures and how they corrected it. Look for evidence that they have had to defend their calculations against external accounting firms. If they worked in a large portfolio, ask how they reconciled the sub ledger to the general ledger at month end. If they cannot explain the timing difference between cash payments and accounting entries, they will fail your reporting requirements. You should also ask them about the software controls they built to prevent double counting of renewals. A real practitioner has a repeatable method for documenting lease commencement dates. If their process seems messy or purely manual without controls, it is a red flag. Press them on how they verify data integrity before running an amortization schedule. You want a person who treats every lease modification as a distinct technical accounting event that requires full documentation and a clear audit trail. That is your baseline.

  • 01Technical proficiency with ASC 842 standards is the baseline for success.
  • 02They must demonstrate clear logic when calculating adjustments during lease lifecycle changes.
  • 03They need to show they can handle the high volume of data points required for large lease portfolios.

02

What do we check before you see anyone?

We review five specific audit points to confirm the candidate logs ASC 842 lease schedules and modifications accurately.

  • 01CPA status or current progress toward licensure for technical depth.
  • 02Documented experience with ASC 842 or IFRS 16 lease accounting frameworks.
  • 03Evidence of managing high-volume data within established ERP software modules.
  • 04Ability to reconcile complex lease schedules to the general ledger during period-end closes.
  • 05Direct experience coordinating with external auditors regarding lease asset disclosures.
  • 06Validation of their role in previous organizations involving cross-functional audit coordination.

03

Where do we find them?

We source candidates from public accounting firms with dedicated lease advisory practices. We also target staff from companies currently undergoing major systems implementations or lease portfolio restructurings. These individuals move when their projects conclude or when they seek permanent roles after a contract engagement ends.

  • 01Auditors at CPA firms transitioning into private industry.
  • 02Staff in manufacturing or retail sectors managing high-volume equipment or real estate leases.
  • 03Accountants exiting corporate roles after a major ERP migration or ASC 842 conversion.

04

Which hiring mistakes should you watch for?

Avoid these common hiring errors.

  • 01Hiring a generalist accountant who lacks specific recent experience with the ASC 842 standard.
  • 02Prioritizing software experience without verifying their ability to explain the underlying accounting logic.
  • 03Overlooking the need for candidates who have successfully managed audits specifically tied to lease schedules.

05

The search in three steps

Our process focuses on your specific technical requirements.

  • 01Identify candidates with direct hands-on experience in lease accounting modules.
  • 02Judge technical skill through specific inquiry on ASC 842 application.
  • 03Connect the most qualified candidates to your interview schedule for final review.

How your Lease Accountant (ASC 842) search runs

How does The Six-Step Search work?

One sequence, from a well-defined seat to a shortlist you can judge.

  1. Search Calibration

We start with a call about the seat, the books, the owners and the people the hire will work with. We learn what the role must fix in the first year and what would make a candidate wrong even if the resume looks right.

You get: A written search brief: scope, must-haves, deal-breakers and the pay range, agreed with you.

  2. Market Mapping

We map the companies and institutions where the right people already work: similar size, similar ownership, similar complexity, in your market and in others.

You get: The target list of companies and institutions we will search, reviewed with you before outreach.

  3. Professional Contact Intelligence

We find direct ways to reach the people on the map. Most are employed and not reading job boards, so reaching them takes real research.

You get: Direct routes to people who are not on job boards, researched for your search.

  4. Persistent Personalized Outreach

We call and write to people individually and follow up. Interest varies, so we discuss the actual opportunity rather than promising a particular response.

You get: One-to-one conversations about your actual role, followed up, never a mass email blast.

  5. Live Candidate Qualification

We speak with every candidate before you do. We check scope, systems, reporting lines, compensation expectations, location and why they would move.

You get: Only candidates we have spoken with, checked on scope, systems, pay, location and motive.

  6. Candidate Intelligence and Process Support

You receive a short written brief on each finalist covering what they have done, where they are thin and what they want. Then we help with interviews, references and the offer.

You get: A short written brief on each finalist, plus help with interviews, references, counteroffer risk and the offer.
