01

What does this hire really come down to?

Who builds your three-statement model from scratch without hand-holding? You need a person who manages budget cycles and variance analysis while translating complex SaaS metrics into clear insights for leadership. They must own the board deck and keep the company model updated as product revenue models evolve.

Judgment involves knowing when to push back on operational spend versus when to fund growth initiatives. The hire will decide which KPIs matter most to the current scaling stage. They will act as the primary translator between financial statements and the executive team's strategic decisions regarding subscription pricing and operating margins.

Ask them: How did you handle a variance in ARR when your forecast missed? What is your process for integrating ASC 606 revenue recognition into a multi-element deal model? Can you describe a specific time you had to defend an expense cut to a department head using data?

When evaluating the scope for this FP&A Manager, you must push beyond standard interview questions to uncover how the candidate actually thinks about data architecture and business logic. Ask them to describe the specific data flow from your CRM to their revenue model and have them identify the exact points where manual overrides occur in their current process. A strong candidate should be able to walk you through how they reconcile raw billing data with recognized revenue without needing a formal request from accounting. You should also demand evidence regarding how they handled a specific technical error in a board-level deck. Do not accept a vague answer about team effort. Force them to define their individual role in troubleshooting the source of the variance. If they mention an EPM tool like Anaplan or Adaptive, ask them to explain a specific calculation they built to handle multi-element revenue allocation. If they cannot explain the underlying formula or logic, they are likely just a user rather than a builder. You also need to confirm their comfort with data cleaning. Ask for a scenario where they identified a fundamental flaw in the company forecast due to bad underlying data. If they say they never found one, treat that as a red flag for a lack of attention to detail. The core of this role is the ability to connect the finance model to operational realities. If the candidate views the finance model as a static document rather than a dynamic tool that requires constant tuning, they will fail to provide the insights you need to make decisions on subscription pricing and operating margins during your next growth phase.

02

What do we check before you see anyone?

We verify their technical ability to build models in Excel from raw data. We confirm they have hands-on experience with EPM tools like Anaplan or Adaptive. We examine their history with SaaS-specific revenue recognition and stock compensation accounting. We assess their experience partnering with sales leadership to model deal margins. We check their capacity to manage the full forecast cycle independently. We confirm their ability to extract and visualize data using tools like SQL or Power BI.

Before you meet a candidate, we perform a deep dive into their past model builds to determine if they prioritize model flexibility or speed of completion. We force a conversation about their specific approach to managing data architecture when source systems change unexpectedly. We ask them to detail a time they refused a stakeholder request because it would compromise model integrity. A central hiring tradeoff we verify is whether the candidate focuses on granular data accuracy or board-level storytelling, as you cannot get both simultaneously at this stage. We confirm they can identify when a model is over-engineered and prune unnecessary complexity.

03

Where do we find them?

We look for finance professionals working in existing SaaS or technology firms who have outgrown their current scope. We find candidates at growth-stage companies where processes are currently breaking and require manual intervention to fix. We seek people who move because they want to own a model from end to end rather than just managing sub-ledgers. We also look for finance leads from professional service firms who possess the rigorous modeling background required to adapt to software revenue cycles.

04

Which hiring mistakes should you watch for?

Candidates who focus on historical reporting rather than forward-looking predictive analysis.

Applicants who have managed software tools but lack the underlying accounting knowledge for ASC 606 or ASC 718.

People who come from massive public organizations and cannot handle the ambiguity or the manual modeling required in a smaller environment.

05

The search in three steps

Screening candidates for technical modeling skills using real-world SaaS logic.

Interviews focused on their ability to explain complex variance results to non-finance stakeholders.

Final review of their capability to build and maintain the long-range model for your board.

How your FP&A Manager search runs

How does The Six-Step Search work?

One sequence, from a well-defined seat to a shortlist you can judge.

  1. Search Calibration

We start with a call about the seat, the books, the owners and the people the hire will work with. We learn what the role must fix in the first year and what would make a candidate wrong even if the resume looks right.

You get: A written search brief: scope, must-haves, deal-breakers and the pay range, agreed with you.

  2. Market Mapping

We map the companies and institutions where the right people already work: similar size, similar ownership, similar complexity, in your market and in others.

You get: The target list of companies and institutions we will search, reviewed with you before outreach.

  3. Professional Contact Intelligence

We find direct ways to reach the people on the map. Most are employed and not reading job boards, so reaching them takes real research.

You get: Direct routes to people who are not on job boards, researched for your search.

  4. Persistent Personalized Outreach

We call and write to people individually and follow up. Interest varies, so we discuss the actual opportunity rather than promising a particular response.

You get: One-to-one conversations about your actual role, followed up, never a mass email blast.

  5. Live Candidate Qualification

We speak with every candidate before you do. We check scope, systems, reporting lines, compensation expectations, location and why they would move.

You get: Only candidates we have spoken with, checked on scope, systems, pay, location and motive.

  6. Candidate Intelligence and Process Support

You receive a short written brief on each finalist covering what they have done, where they are thin and what they want. Then we help with interviews, references and the offer.

You get: A short written brief on each finalist, plus help with interviews, references, counteroffer risk and the offer.

Questions people ask

Must I pay a fee before hiring an expert to update our complex product revenue models?

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.

How do you verify technical proficiency?

We review their actual model outputs and probe their understanding of SaaS metrics like ARR and churn. We ask specifically how they structure models to account for multi-element contracts.

How is this role different from a Finance Director?

The Manager role is execution-heavy and sits closer to the data entry and model building. A Director is expected to focus more on strategy and high-level stakeholder management.

Can you handle a contract-to-hire arrangement?

Yes, we can support temporary or contract-to-hire needs. We will agree to the specific terms for those engagements before the search begins.

How soon will I see a FP&A Manager shortlist?

It depends on the seat, the location and the pay. We give you an honest read after the calibration call and we do not promise dates we cannot control.

What about counteroffers on a FP&A Manager hire?

We ask every FP&A Manager candidate early why they would move and what their employer might do to keep them. Counteroffer risk goes in the written brief before you make an offer.

What is your guarantee?

We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.

What don't you do?

We do not post your FP&A Manager job and forward whoever applies. We do not send stacks of unscreened resumes, and we do not recruit outside accounting, finance, banking and insurance.
