01
What does this hire really come down to?
This person must reconcile raw accounting data with executive dashboard requirements. You need someone who writes clean SQL and builds reliable visualization layers for stakeholders. They define how data flows between the ERP and reporting tools.
Expect them to build the actual connections between source modules and the front end. They should handle the logic for financial mapping without manual intervention. If the data is dirty or the sync breaks, they find the root cause.
Ask them: How do you handle a change in the chart of accounts without breaking existing reports? Describe a time a data integration failed between the GL and your BI tool. What specific steps did you take to re-sync the datasets?
Define the data scope during our initial call. Do not assume a generalist can map finance data without specific instructions. Ask them to share past SQL scripts. Observe their approach to joins and data sanitization. If they cannot detail the ETL logic used to sync their last ERP with a reporting interface, stop the session. Request they draw their workflow on a whiteboard. Can they sketch the movement from raw ledger files to a finished report? Determine their awareness of data location at rest versus in motion. Require them to show their method for checking data against a trial balance. Disqualify them if they rely on visual inspection; you need automated scripts for consistency. Ask how they resolved conflicting definitions for cost centers in a prior environment. Review if they document schema changes. If they cannot produce a project file showing their version history, they will add technical debt to your system. Ask about row-level security. If they cannot restrict data view access by department, they will expose sensitive reporting. Query their choice of join methods for high-volume loads. Do they understand index performance? If their queries stall as data grows, reporting will fail at month end. We only source candidates who demonstrate this degree of model control. If they prioritize aesthetics over data accuracy, end the call. The role centers on the model. Verify they have experience linking your specific BI tool to your ledger. If they have only used static spreadsheets, they are not ready for this project.
02
What do we check before you see anyone?
We begin by mapping your specific data infrastructure to the requirements of the finance team to determine if the project demands a builder or a maintainer. Before you interview anyone we require candidates to explain the precise steps they take to audit data consistency between the general ledger and the reporting warehouse. We force them to provide concrete examples of how they handle schema shifts during system upgrades. You face a choice between hiring someone who focuses on the speed of report delivery versus one who prioritizes auditability of every row of data. We investigate their logic for handling volume because a report that works with small test sets often breaks under actual month end pressure. We confirm they know how to apply security constraints to prevent ledger access leakage. If they cannot explain these technical tradeoffs without reverting to software manuals, we exclude them.
- 01Practical evidence of SQL querying beyond simple select statements, focusing on complex joins and window functions.
- 02Experience building automated reporting from specific ERP systems like NetSuite, SAP, or Sage Intacct.
- 03Capability to map GL data fields to BI dashboards using tools like Power BI, Tableau, or similar platforms.
- 04Documentation of how they managed data warehouse schemas to support month-end close schedules.
- 05Verification of their specific approach to user permissions and row-level security within reporting environments.
- 06Clear demonstration of working with finance teams to translate vague business requests into technical requirements.
03
Where do we find them?
We recruit from specialized finance transformation consultancies and internal finance operations teams. Candidates move when they complete a major ERP implementation and lose interest in maintenance. They look for new systems or migrations where they can own the data structure from the start.
04
Which hiring mistakes should you watch for?
- 01Hiring a general data scientist who lacks a fundamental grasp of accounting principles and GL structures.
- 02Ignoring the need for ERP-specific system knowledge, forcing the new hire to learn the software architecture during their first month.
- 03Prioritizing dashboard aesthetics over the technical accuracy of the underlying financial data models.
05
The search in three steps
- 01We identify professionals with direct experience mapping GL data to BI tools in your specific ERP environment.
- 02We conduct technical vetting to confirm they can manage system integrations and fix broken data pipelines independently.
- 03We introduce candidates to you once they confirm their interest, with no upfront fees and payment only upon a successful hire.
How your Finance Data / BI Analyst search runs
How does The Six-Step Search work?
One sequence, from a well-defined seat to a shortlist you can judge.
Search Calibration
We start with a call about the seat, the books, the owners and the people the hire will work with. We learn what the role must fix in the first year and what would make a candidate wrong even if the resume looks right.
You get: A written search brief: scope, must-haves, deal-breakers and the pay range, agreed with you.
Market Mapping
We map the companies and institutions where the right people already work: similar size, similar ownership, similar complexity, in your market and in others.
You get: The target list of companies and institutions we will search, reviewed with you before outreach.
Professional Contact Intelligence
We find direct ways to reach the people on the map. Most are employed and not reading job boards, so reaching them takes real research.
You get: Direct routes to people who are not on job boards, researched for your search.
Persistent Personalized Outreach
We call and write to people individually and follow up. Interest varies, so we discuss the actual opportunity rather than promising a particular response.
You get: One-to-one conversations about your actual role, followed up, never a mass email blast.
Live Candidate Qualification
We speak with every candidate before you do. We check scope, systems, reporting lines, compensation expectations, location and why they would move.
You get: Only candidates we have spoken with, checked on scope, systems, pay, location and motive.
Candidate Intelligence and Process Support
You receive a short written brief on each finalist covering what they have done, where they are thin and what they want. Then we help with interviews, references and the offer.
You get: A short written brief on each finalist, plus help with interviews, references, counteroffer risk and the offer.
