01
What does this hire really come down to?
Who approves the adjustment to debt instrument valuation? This person defines your accounting policies for new revenue streams and complicated debt instruments. They must own the memo drafting process for every significant transaction before the auditors arrive.
Expect this individual to act as the primary advisor on technical issues for your controller. They decide whether a lease is capital or operating and how to account for equity-based compensation. They must defend these positions to external audit partners with documentation that is audit-ready on day one.
We ask candidates these questions: How did you handle a recent change in revenue recognition standards? Show me a memo you wrote that changed how your last company booked a transaction. How do you manage the friction between aggressive deal terms and rigid accounting requirements?
You must define the scope of this role by asking how the candidate manages the specific timeline between a transaction closing and the draft memo reaching the auditors. Avoid vague answers about cross-functional collaboration. Force the candidate to explain their specific workflow for identifying a new technical accounting requirement. Ask them to describe a moment where an auditor rejected their initial position. Evaluate whether they can quickly pivot to a defensible alternative based on existing GAAP literature. Do not accept stories about team success without specific evidence of their individual drafting work. Require a sample of a technical memo they personally wrote for a complex transaction. Check if they can identify the exact ASC sections that applied to their specific business scenario. Use this evidence to determine if they understand the difference between theoretical accounting and practical reporting. If they cannot describe the mechanics of the journal entry impact from their memo, they lack the operational context needed for this position. Test their ability to translate a complex debt restructuring into clear prose. Watch for how they prioritize disclosure requirements versus operational speed. During the scope conversation, confirm they possess active CPA status to manage the external audit relationship without supervision. Verify they have experience drafting Reg S-X disclosures for actual public filings. If they cannot explain how they resolved a specific disagreement regarding revenue recognition during a quarterly review, they are not ready to lead your policy. You are looking for a practitioner who remains grounded in the realities of a month-end close cycle while drafting dense technical documentation under pressure.
02
What do we check before you see anyone?
We review five specific areas to confirm they can perform these duties upon starting.
- 01Hands-on experience with technical accounting memos for complex transactions like M&A or debt restructurings.
- 02Demonstrated ability to apply ASC 606 revenue recognition standards across multiple business lines.
- 03Direct interaction with external audit teams to resolve technical disagreements on reporting.
- 04Clear proficiency in GAAP and SEC reporting impacts including Reg S-X disclosures.
- 05Ability to translate complex accounting policy into operational processes for the general ledger team.
- 06Verification of active CPA status for current licensing requirements.
03
Where do we find them?
We target two main pools for this role. First, we look at managers in large public accounting firms who are tired of the audit cycle and want to work for a single company. They move because they want to own the implementation of policy rather than just reviewing someone else's work.
Second, we look at current technical accounting managers at public companies who are blocked from promotion. They move for more autonomy and the ability to influence financial strategy at a higher level. They are looking for a seat at the table where they can define policy rather than just follow it.
04
Which hiring mistakes should you watch for?
- 01Hiring a candidate who only knows how to review work instead of drafting technical memos from scratch.
- 02Ignoring the need for operational accounting experience, which leaves the technical work isolated from the monthly close process.
- 03Failing to confirm their ability to explain complex accounting matters to non-finance executives or your board.
05
The search in three steps
- 01We map out qualified candidates from public companies and audit firms that share your business model.
- 02We conduct an initial technical screen to verify their specific experience with revenue recognition and debt instruments.
- 03We present you with a shortlist of candidates who can handle your current accounting challenges and provide a direct assessment of their technical capabilities.
How your Director of Technical Accounting search runs
How does The Six-Step Search work?
Research, direct conversations and professional judgment, with follow-through through the offer.
Search Calibration
We establish what this person must own: reporting demands, systems responsibilities, team, decision authority and first-year needs. We ask what would make an otherwise good candidate wrong for this job.
You get: An agreed search brief and a clear basis for judging fit.
Market Mapping
We research relevant operating environments, not just matching titles. An owner-led business, a portfolio company and a regulated lender can need different experience from someone with the same job title.
You get: A reasoned research direction, with scope differences made explicit.
Professional Contact Intelligence
We research professional ways to contact the people identified. Finding a name is a starting point; it does not establish availability, interest or fit.
You get: A route to a professional conversation, not simply a candidate list.
Persistent Personalized Outreach
We contact people directly about the actual work and follow through on the conversation. We explain the remit and discuss whether a move could make sense. Not everyone will answer or want to move.
You get: A candid view of interest, objections and the tradeoffs in your opportunity.
Live Candidate Qualification
We discuss what each person actually owned, the complexity involved, their reasons for considering a move, compensation expectations and practical constraints. The questions fit the assignment, from a staff accounting seat to CFO.
You get: A candidate account of relevant ownership, with gaps left visible.
Candidate Intelligence and Process Support
Written recruiter context explains relevant experience, strengths and remaining questions. After introduction, we gather feedback, resolve questions, discuss changed requirements and support interviews and offer decisions. You retain the hiring decision and technical assessment.
You get: Continuity through the offer, rather than a handoff that ends at an introduction.
Questions people ask
When is a fee due for finding someone to draft memos for significant transactions?
No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.
What are the decision rights of a Director of Technical Accounting versus a Controller?
The Director defines accounting policy and researches technical positions. The Controller owns the final financial statements and the operational close cycle.
Can you handle a fractional or interim search for this role?
Yes, we can provide interim candidates for this position. Please contact our Interim Executives team to discuss specific engagement terms.
How do you handle candidates who are not currently CPAs?
We prioritize active CPA status for this role given the technical nature of the work. We will only present non-CPA candidates if they possess highly unique specialized experience.
How soon will I see a Director of Technical Accounting shortlist?
It depends on the seat, the location and the pay. We give you an honest read after the calibration call and we do not promise dates we cannot control.
What about counteroffers on a Director of Technical Accounting hire?
We ask every Director of Technical Accounting candidate early why they would move and what their employer might do to keep them. Counteroffer risk goes in the written brief before you make an offer.
What is your guarantee?
We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.
What don't you do?
We do not post your Director of Technical Accounting job and forward whoever applies. We do not send stacks of unscreened resumes, and we do not recruit outside accounting, finance, banking and insurance.
