What does this hire really come down to?
Who approves the adjustment to convert financial results into investor updates? This person manages communications during earnings cycles and aligns equity messaging with corporate strategy. You gain a primary contact between your directors and the investment community.
Expect them to build the deck, manage the calendar for conferences, and handle inquiries from analysts daily. They must know the difference between a minor variance and a material risk to the stock narrative. Their judgment dictates how investors interpret your growth phases.
We check candidates with these questions. How do you explain a quarter where guidance was missed? What metrics matter most to long-term holders versus day traders? How do you coach executives to answer difficult questions during conference calls?
You need to decide if this person manages the mechanical production of earnings materials or if they define the strategic narrative. Ask them to walk you through a specific instance where they had to revise an equity story mid-cycle due to unexpected market reaction. Watch if they explain the shift in communication or if they focus on the accounting adjustment. If a candidate cannot describe the delta between an analyst consensus model and your internal projections, they are not ready for this seat. Ask them to explain exactly which sell-side models they track and how they weight different analyst inputs when calculating the range of expectations you present to the board. If they struggle to identify the exact metrics driving the movement in your peer group, they will fail to prepare your leadership for tough questions. When vetting their work product, require them to show you a draft earnings script where they were forced to remove technical jargon to protect the core message. Look for evidence they can defend their word choices when challenged by a CFO or General Counsel. Do not accept a generic description of their work. Ask how they reconcile their own data with the external narrative when your stock price disconnects from the broader sector performance. If they cite a process that requires a team of five to produce a single deck, challenge them on how they will produce results alone. A candidate must show they know how to extract the narrative from raw financial data without waiting for a controller to format the report. Ask them to recount a time they successfully steered a skeptical investor through a difficult quarter by clarifying long-term objectives. This is your test of their ability to preserve your market valuation during periods of volatility. If they cannot distinguish between helpful transparency and excessive disclosure, they present a risk to your public interaction strategy.
- 01Verifying their history with earnings script production and board-level presentation materials.
- 02Checking their ability to maintain an analyst consensus model without external support.
- 03Testing their knowledge of SEC reporting requirements and fair disclosure rules.
- 04Confirming their experience with valuation techniques commonly used by buy-side firms.
- 05Evaluating their comfort level in coaching non-finance executives on market messaging.
- 06Reviewing their communication style when addressing negative market feedback.
02
Where do we find them?
We source candidates from existing investor relations teams at similar-sized firms. We also look for finance managers with deep experience in external reporting who want to shift into public-facing functions. Former sell-side analysts who understand the valuation models used by your coverers are strong prospects.
Candidates move when their current firm lacks a clear path to managing investor communication strategy or when they seek exposure to a specific growth stage. They often jump to get closer to the CEO or CFO in a firm that treats the equity story as a core business driver.
- 01Focusing on presentation style rather than quantitative accuracy in the first interview.
- 02Ignoring the importance of how the candidate builds their internal network.
- 03Assuming a candidate from a large firm can function without a massive support team.
03
What should we discuss first?
We define the specific investor profile you are targeting and the current state of your financial reporting.
We vet candidates against your reporting requirements and their experience with actual earnings cycles.
We introduce only those who possess the communication habits and technical grasp required for this specific role.
- 01Defining the responsibilities of the IR function.
- 02Vetting based on earnings cycle experience.
- 03Presenting candidates for your review.
