01
What does this hire really come down to?
This role requires someone who can build and manage investment models rather than just picking stocks. You need an operator who understands how to translate client risk profiles into diversified portfolios. They act as the final voice on the investment committee and must handle the pressure of market shifts.
Your new CIO handles the construction of internal model portfolios and selects the external funds or alternative investments used firm-wide. They own the communication strategy for advisors. If they cannot explain complex shifts to a client-facing advisor, they will fail at this firm.
Ask them to walk through a specific trade or allocation change they made during a volatility event. We need to hear their logic on why they held or sold. Ask how they balance the firm's house view against an advisor's specific request for a client. Their answer reveals if they protect the firm's model or if they give in too easily.
responsibilities clarity starts by forcing the candidate to defend their specific role in asset allocation versus fund selection. You must verify if they personally built the internal models or simply managed a sub-advisor oversight process. Ask for a specific example where they recommended an alternative asset class that an advisor initially pushed back on for a client. Their answer shows if they can defend the firm house view without alienating the advisor. Listen for how they manage the trade-off between keeping the model pure and handling specific client risk constraints. A candidate who ignores the operational reality of advisors will fail to get buy-in for their strategy. Check if they have built an investment committee from scratch or just inherited one. They need to show they can handle the voting process and manage dissent within the committee. Question their specific experience with portfolio construction software and if they were the primary user or if they delegated those inputs. Ask for a breakdown of their process for vetting external managers. If they cannot explain their quantitative and qualitative criteria, they lack the rigor required for this role. Require them to describe their process for rebalancing during a market sell-off. If they discuss theory rather than their actual actions during a specific period of stress, they are likely just reading from a playbook. Finally, push them to explain how they communicate policy changes to the team. If they rely on static reports rather than active engagement, they will not be effective here. Your goal is to identify if they can actually own the investment output or if they simply oversaw the work of others.
02
What do we check before you see anyone?
We verify they hold a CFA and check the status of that license. We search for disciplinary records on BrokerCheck. We check their history in investment committees to confirm voting power. We look for a history of managing HNW assets rather than institutional accounts. We screen for current use of portfolio construction software. We read their public white papers to check their clarity.
We first confirm if their investment process relies on third-party model providers or if they personally maintain the underlying security selection and rebalancing logic. You need to know if they treat asset allocation as an intellectual exercise or a practical tool for client retention. We test for the specific trade-off between model performance and advisor satisfaction. A candidate must show how they adjust model exposure for a client without breaking the firm risk job. If they prioritize academic accuracy over client understanding, they will struggle to gain trust from your internal advisory team.
03
Where do we find them?
We look for candidates at other RIAs, wealth management boutiques, and private banks. People usually move for a chance to own the investment process at a smaller firm where they have more autonomy. They also switch if their current firm is limiting the responsibilities of available investment tools. We avoid those who have only worked at massive firms without direct accountability for asset allocation decisions.
04
Which hiring mistakes should you watch for?
- 01Hiring a candidate who excels at research but lacks the ability to talk to advisors or clients.
- 02Focusing too much on the candidate's personal network of prospects instead of their investment management capability.
- 03Overlooking a candidate's struggle to adjust their strategy based on the specific risk tolerance of the firm's existing client base.
05
What should we discuss first?
- 01Targeting current CIOs or lead Portfolio Managers at firms with similar AUM and client demographics.
- 02Conducting deep-dive interviews to verify their technical process and their approach to model portfolio management.
- 03Presenting a short list of qualified individuals for your final review and selection.

Questions people ask
When is a fee owed for finding someone to build investment models and manage portfolio risk?
No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.
How do you define the CIO's authority?
The CIO sets the investment philosophy and controls the internal model portfolios. They provide guidance to advisors, but individual client trades often remain subject to the primary advisor's relationship with the client.
Do you provide contract or interim options for this role?
While permanent contingency is the default, we offer contract and fractional executive placements upon request. We agree on all terms for these engagements before starting.
Can you find a candidate who is also a CFA charterholder?
We prioritize candidates with the CFA designation. We verify their credential status as part of our initial screening process.
What is the primary difference between a CIO and a Senior Portfolio Manager?
The CIO manages the firm's investment committee and dictates the overarching firm strategy. A Portfolio Manager generally executes within those established strategies for specific books of business.
