01
What does this hire really come down to?
Can you execute audit field work and close files without daily check-ins? You need someone who closes files without back and forth. How do you manage the engagement timeline from initial planning to final report delivery? Who do you answer to regarding the audit results?
They oversee associates and seniors. They judge the quality of work papers for technical accuracy. They decide when an engagement is complete. They clear review notes independently. They protect firm margins by keeping billable hours aligned with the budget.
We ask: How do you handle an associate who misses a deadline? Give an example of a technical audit issue you identified on a client site. How do you resolve a client dispute about requested evidence? What is your process for documenting a complex accounting estimate? When do you decide to escalate a problem to a partner?
When scoping this role, specify if the work covers private firm audits or public company SOX engagements. Ask the candidate to explain their method for reconciling discrepancies between client-provided data and independent sources. How do they select samples for substantive testing? Require them to describe an engagement where the scope changed mid-audit. How did they prioritize the revised audit program against budget limits? Ask them to explain a time they stood firm on a management letter comment regarding control weaknesses. How do they evaluate risk in complex asset valuations? Require them to describe their process for reviewing the work of junior staff on a specific industry engagement. When do they decide to escalate a finding to a partner? Ask them to detail a file they managed from initial planning to sign-off. What is their approach to identifying fraud indicators versus clerical errors?
02
What do we check before you see anyone?
We verify active CPA license status through state board records.
We confirm the candidate has served as an in-charge on full-cycle audit engagements.
We require evidence of direct oversight for at least two staff-level employees.
We review the specific industry segments they have audited for niche compliance.
We confirm their experience with current audit software platforms.
We check for stability in their last two audit roles.
Before you interview a candidate we dig into the actual mechanics of their audit process through a targeted scope conversation. We start by asking them to walk us through the specific audit programs they constructed from scratch for a client in your exact industry sector. We want to see how they define the audit universe for a new engagement. We push them to describe their method for identifying the key controls in a high-risk process and how they document the rationale for choosing test of controls over substantive testing. We also require them to provide specific evidence of how they handle the pivot when a client provides incomplete or unreliable trial balances. We look for a clear description of the specific software tools or spreadsheets used to reconcile these discrepancies and how they track those adjustments throughout the field work phase. We also confront them with a hiring tradeoff common to this level of firm operations. We ask them to choose between maintaining a strict adherence to the planned audit hours which protects your current margins or allowing for extra time to investigate a minor variance that might lead to a significant finding. Their answer reveals whether they prioritize the billable budget as a fixed constraint or if they have the judgment to sacrifice short-term efficiency for the sake of audit quality and firm protection. We require them to explain a situation where they had to pull a staff member off a task because the work quality did not meet the firm standard and how they personally corrected the errors to bring the file to final review. We assess their ability to manage the technical and human variables of the audit cycle simultaneously without needing constant partner intervention.
03
Where do we find them?
We target professionals at regional or national CPA firms. They look to move when their current firm lacks a clear promotion path to manager. They also move if their industry niche is stagnant or if they seek a change in engagement size. We avoid people who have only worked as internal auditors, as they lack the billable focus of public accounting.
04
Which hiring mistakes should you watch for?
- 01Hiring a manager who cannot perform the actual audit technical work.
- 02Ignoring the candidate's experience with the specific size of your client base.
- 03Focusing on tenure instead of the number of engagements led.
05
The search in three steps
- 01We review current audit work experience against your firm size.
- 02We conduct a technical phone screen regarding engagement management.
- 03We present qualified candidates for your interview process.
How your Audit Supervisor search runs
How does The Six-Step Search work?
Research, direct conversations and professional judgment, with follow-through through the offer.
Search Calibration
We establish what this person must own: reporting demands, systems responsibilities, team, decision authority and first-year needs. We ask what would make an otherwise good candidate wrong for this job.
You get: An agreed search brief and a clear basis for judging fit.
Market Mapping
We research relevant operating environments, not just matching titles. An owner-led business, a portfolio company and a regulated lender can need different experience from someone with the same job title.
You get: A reasoned research direction, with scope differences made explicit.
Professional Contact Intelligence
We research professional ways to contact the people identified. Finding a name is a starting point; it does not establish availability, interest or fit.
You get: A route to a professional conversation, not simply a candidate list.
Persistent Personalized Outreach
We contact people directly about the actual work and follow through on the conversation. We explain the remit and discuss whether a move could make sense. Not everyone will answer or want to move.
You get: A candid view of interest, objections and the tradeoffs in your opportunity.
Live Candidate Qualification
We discuss what each person actually owned, the complexity involved, their reasons for considering a move, compensation expectations and practical constraints. The questions fit the assignment, from a staff accounting seat to CFO.
You get: A candidate account of relevant ownership, with gaps left visible.
Candidate Intelligence and Process Support
Written recruiter context explains relevant experience, strengths and remaining questions. After introduction, we gather feedback, resolve questions, discuss changed requirements and support interviews and offer decisions. You retain the hiring decision and technical assessment.
You get: Continuity through the offer, rather than a handoff that ends at an introduction.
Questions people ask
Is payment required while you search for someone to close my audit files?
No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.
Is this a permanent placement?
Permanent contingency is our default. We provide contract, temp-to-perm, and busy-season support upon request with terms agreed per engagement.
How does an audit supervisor differ from a manager?
A supervisor manages field-level execution and staff. A manager holds final decision rights on audit opinions and firm client relationships.
Do you handle interim staffing?
We handle standard staffing needs. Interim or fractional executive requirements are directed to our dedicated Interim Executives group.
What is the fee for a Audit Supervisor search?
No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. The fee and terms are agreed in writing before we start.
How soon will I see a Audit Supervisor shortlist?
It depends on the seat, the location and the pay. We give you an honest read after the calibration call and we do not promise dates we cannot control.
What about counteroffers on a Audit Supervisor hire?
We ask every Audit Supervisor candidate early why they would move and what their employer might do to keep them. Counteroffer risk goes in the written brief before you make an offer.
What is your guarantee?
We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.
What don't you do?
We do not post your Audit Supervisor job and forward whoever applies. We do not send stacks of unscreened resumes, and we do not recruit outside accounting, finance, banking and insurance.
