01
What does this hire really come down to?
This role hinges on managing the credit risk of revolving lines of credit secured by accounts receivable, inventory, and equipment. Can the candidate perform collateral audits and monitor borrowing bases daily? Who approves the adjustment if they fail to identify shifts in collateral value before a decline?
Your new hire will balance business development with strict credit administration. They must win new accounts that fit your specific risk appetite while avoiding bad debt. We ask candidates how they handle a borrowing base certificate that shows a sudden spike in ineligible receivables during a volatile period.
Judgment is required to determine when to tighten lending terms versus when to offer a client temporary flexibility. We ask them to explain a time they had to exit a relationship that went sideways. If they cannot explain their credit decisions with specific examples of collateral tracking, do not hire them.
You must define the exact scope of this role before we start. Ask the candidate to explain their process for reconciling borrowing base certificates against general ledger data. Do they use Excel or a specific loan accounting system? If they rely on templates without understanding the underlying math, they will fail to catch errors in your portfolio. Require them to walk through a specific case where they had to pull a line of credit due to deteriorating collateral quality. Did they spot the issue through audit findings or via an automated report? Listen for whether they document their rationale for asset eligibility. Require a clear rationale for accepting or rejecting specific assets during market shifts. Candidates must support their decisions with evidence from covenant tracking or audit verification. Ask them how they balance the speed of closing a new facility with the need for accurate initial collateral valuation. Does their process prioritize the safety of the advance rate, or do they lean on assumptions provided by the borrower? Probe their experience with cross-collateralization strategies and how they handle disputes over the value of aged inventory. If they cannot describe the mechanics of intercreditor claims or the specifics of a bankruptcy preference risk, do not move forward. You are looking for a person who views collateral audits as a proactive monitoring tool rather than a checklist for compliance. Question them on how they manage client expectations when collateral values drop below the required margin. Do they provide actionable feedback to the borrower, or do they simply restrict funding without context? A skilled manager maintains the client relationship while strictly enforcing credit limits. Ask if they prefer to sit in the back office analyzing reports or if they actively conduct site visits to verify equipment and stock levels firsthand. You need the latter.
- 01Verify their technical understanding of advance rates for different asset classes.
- 02Confirm their ability to read financial statements beyond the balance sheet to assess cash flow.
- 03Testing their understanding of the mechanics behind intercreditor agreements.
- 04Check that their past portfolio performance matches the risk profile of your institution.
- 05Verify that they know how to interact with internal credit committees and loan operations.
- 06Assess their experience with the specific software or spreadsheet models you use to track loan covenants.
02
Where do we find them?
We source candidates from regional banks, non-bank commercial finance companies, and large institutional lenders that maintain active ABL divisions. We look for individuals currently in similar roles who are facing restricted internal resources or institutional mergers. Professionals often move when their current lender shifts its risk appetite away from the mid-market asset-based space.
We start with a scoping discussion to determine if your primary pressure point is portfolio churn or new business growth. A candidate who prioritizes rapid facility closing often neglects deep diligence on inventory dilution or trade cycle shifts. We probe if they evaluate a client by focusing on the accounts receivable aging report or the physical state of the collateral. Ask them to reconcile a borrowing base certificate that shows a discrepancy with the general ledger. A core tradeoff exists between relationship warmth and credit protection. A manager who yields too quickly on margin requirements to protect a borrower relationship invites default risk.
- 01Ignoring borrower red flags such as excessive customer concentrations to win a deal.
- 02Failing to communicate negative collateral changes to credit risk teams in a timely manner.
- 03Prioritizing sales volume over the fundamental credit quality of the collateral pool.
03
The search in three steps
We identify candidates who hold the necessary technical experience in securing and monitoring asset-based loans. We verify their recent performance in portfolio management and client acquisition within the ABL space. We deliver only the candidates who meet your criteria and are ready for a conversation.
- 01Search and qualification phase.
- 02Presentation of vetted candidates.
- 03Interview coordination and offer finalization.
