01

What does this hire really come down to?

You need someone who handles technical accounting research while managing senior accounting managers. This role is about accuracy in multi-entity environments and keeping the books ready for external audits. You are not looking for a generalist but a technical leader who writes accounting memos for complex transactions.

They must manage the financial close and modify it as the business changes. This involves mapping the workflow for multi-entity consolidations and managing team handoffs. They need to show how they have updated accounting systems to reduce cycle times.

Ask them how they resolve discrepancies in multi-entity reporting during a hard close. Ask them to describe their approach to implementing new accounting standards across multiple units. If they cannot explain a specific instance where they identified and corrected a material reporting error, look elsewhere. Ask how they balance technical research with daily operational deadlines. Have them walk you through the most difficult audit opinion they had to defend to an external firm. Expect them to explain the specific accounting impact of a recent acquisition or divestiture they oversaw. Ask for the exact steps they take to manage intercompany eliminations in a system like NetSuite or SAP. If their answers are vague on the technical specifics of these tasks, they are not your hire. You need someone who can go from explaining a complex ASC 842 lease implementation to managing a direct report who is struggling with a routine bank reconciliation. Precision matters more than broad experience here. Demand concrete examples of how they handled a breakdown in communication between their team and the external auditors. Did they resolve the issue through process change or just through more manual labor. You want the person who changed the process.

They must be comfortable in the weeds when a high-priority issue hits. A VP who refuses to touch the details will eventually fail in this environment. They must also be comfortable delegating the routine work so they can focus on the board-level reporting or complex tax strategies. Look for the balance between oversight and technical depth.

02

What do we check before you see anyone?

We verify these six items before presenting any candidate to you.

We begin with a scope conversation to identify which financial reporting or systems work you need solved versus which you need managed. We then require candidates to produce specific evidence such as an anonymized accounting memo drafted for a recent sensitive audit to demonstrate their technical reasoning. A critical hiring tradeoff we assess is whether you need a builder who can manually clean up ledger structures or a delegator who can maintain established internal controls. We filter for those who provide clear examples of choosing long-term structural accuracy over immediate speed when these priorities conflict during a quarter-end close.

  • 01Active CPA status as it is essential for the level of technical accounting oversight required here.
  • 02Management experience where they directly supervised managers rather than individual contributors.
  • 03Direct experience drafting and defending technical accounting memos for auditors.
  • 04Operational history of managing multi-entity consolidations and foreign currency translations.
  • 05A clear explanation of how they structured or improved an accounting team after a period of rapid change.
  • 06Evidence of managing the relationship between the company and external auditors during year-end requirements.

03

Where do we find them?

We source from candidates currently working as Controllers at large companies or Directors of Accounting in multi-entity structures. We look for individuals who have outgrown their current scope or seek a greater challenge in an environment requiring high technical output. A move is logical when the candidate faces a rigid ceiling in their current organization or when the accounting complexity has plateaued and they seek a new, more difficult environment.

These individuals are not looking for titles. They look for the level of reporting autonomy and the scale of the financial complexity they will manage. We target those who are ready to transition from pure execution to managing the strategy of the accounting function.

04

Which hiring mistakes should you watch for?

Avoid these common traps during the hiring process.

  • 01Hiring a strong individual contributor who lacks experience managing other managers.
  • 02Overlooking the need for direct experience with complex multi-entity consolidation workflows.
  • 03Assuming a candidate who managed one clean business can handle a disorganized, multi-entity environment.
  • 04Prioritizing industry-specific knowledge over the ability to handle technical accounting complexity.
  • 05Ignoring red flags during the reference check regarding their management style.

05

The search in three steps

We move through these steps to find the right person for your team.

  • 01Identify candidates with specific experience in multi-entity environments and technical accounting memo writing.
  • 02Screen through direct conversations regarding their approach to audit management and staff development.
  • 03Present only those candidates who possess the required technical depth and management history.

How your VP of Accounting search runs

How does The Six-Step Search work?

Research, direct conversations and professional judgment, with follow-through through the offer.

  1. Search Calibration

We establish what this person must own: reporting demands, systems responsibilities, team, decision authority and first-year needs. We ask what would make an otherwise good candidate wrong for this job.

You get: An agreed search brief and a clear basis for judging fit.

  2. Market Mapping

We research relevant operating environments, not just matching titles. An owner-led business, a portfolio company and a regulated lender can need different experience from someone with the same job title.

You get: A reasoned research direction, with scope differences made explicit.

  3. Professional Contact Intelligence

We research professional ways to contact the people identified. Finding a name is a starting point; it does not establish availability, interest or fit.

You get: A route to a professional conversation, not simply a candidate list.

  4. Persistent Personalized Outreach

We contact people directly about the actual work and follow through on the conversation. We explain the remit and discuss whether a move could make sense. Not everyone will answer or want to move.

You get: A candid view of interest, objections and the tradeoffs in your opportunity.

  5. Live Candidate Qualification

We discuss what each person actually owned, the complexity involved, their reasons for considering a move, compensation expectations and practical constraints. The questions fit the assignment, from a staff accounting seat to CFO.

You get: A candidate account of relevant ownership, with gaps left visible.

  6. Candidate Intelligence and Process Support

Written recruiter context explains relevant experience, strengths and remaining questions. After introduction, we gather feedback, resolve questions, discuss changed requirements and support interviews and offer decisions. You retain the hiring decision and technical assessment.

You get: Continuity through the offer, rather than a handoff that ends at an introduction.

Questions people ask

Do I pay upfront for hiring a leader who writes accounting memos for complex transactions?

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.

How does this role differ from a Corporate Controller?

The VP of Accounting focuses more on strategic technical accounting and high-level structure, whereas the Corporate Controller is often more hands-on with day-to-day close operations. The VP of Accounting frequently manages the managers who run those specific close functions.

How do you source candidates for this level?

We target experienced accounting professionals in high-complexity environments. We evaluate their ability to manage teams and their technical knowledge of consolidations and audit processes.

Is this a permanent direct-hire engagement?

Yes, we can support contract, temp-to-perm, or busy-season needs. Please let us know if you require these terms, and we will prepare a separate agreement.

What is the fee for a VP of Accounting search?

No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. The fee and terms are agreed in writing before we start.

How soon will I see a VP of Accounting shortlist?

It depends on the seat, the location and the pay. We give you an honest read after the calibration call and we do not promise dates we cannot control.

What about counteroffers on a VP of Accounting hire?

We ask every VP of Accounting candidate early why they would move and what their employer might do to keep them. Counteroffer risk goes in the written brief before you make an offer.

What is your guarantee?

We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.

What don't you do?

We do not post your VP of Accounting job and forward whoever applies. We do not send stacks of unscreened resumes, and we do not recruit outside accounting, finance, banking and insurance.
