01
What does this hire really come down to?
Does this candidate perform control testing and draft audit reports for leadership? You need someone who performs complex control testing and translates findings into clear audit reports for leadership. Can they manage interactions with external auditors and maintain internal audit deadlines?
Expect this person to lead process walkthroughs and manage the daily tasks of junior staff. They must identify control gaps before they become audit issues. They possess enough judgment to decide when a finding requires escalation to the Audit Committee versus when it is a minor operational correction.
Ask them to explain a time they disagreed with a business process owner about a control deficiency. Ask for their specific approach to risk-based audit planning. Query them on their experience mapping ITGCs to financial reporting impacts during a SOX engagement.
You need to define the specific boundaries of this supervisory role before we start the search. Ask the candidate to walk you through exactly which SOX cycles they personally owned versus which ones they merely supported. If they talk about audit planning, push them to describe the specific risk assessment criteria they used to allocate hours for junior staff on a quarterly basis. A major mistake is assuming that past oversight in a firm translates directly to managing a corporate team. You must find out if they can set the scope for a new control testing area without constant guidance from a director. Ask them to describe a time they had to adjust the testing sample size due to an unexpected change in business operations. If they cannot explain the underlying logic behind their sampling method, they are not ready for this level of responsibility. We must determine if they prioritize technical perfection at the expense of reporting deadlines. Use these conversations to gauge if they view the audit plan as a fixed document or a living tool for managing risk. If they lack clear examples of managing an audit lifecycle from initial planning to final board reporting, they will likely struggle with your current team structure.
02
What do we check before you see anyone?
We check current CPA or CIA status to verify regulatory knowledge. We look for IIA Standards usage in past audit manuals. We screen for SOC 1 and SOC 2 reviews to distinguish them from general financial testing. We check their history of managing ERP access controls to verify IT security knowledge. We confirm they have produced formal reports for boards. We filter for candidates who perform end-to-end testing cycles.
We first conduct a scoping call to map your specific audit cycle against the candidates own history of program ownership. We ask for evidence of how they determined testing sample sizes when internal control data was incomplete or inaccurate. We confront the tradeoff between hiring for deep industry compliance knowledge versus hiring for broad ERP configuration expertise. A candidate strong in financial reporting often lacks the IT logic required for modern SOX environments. We verify if they define risk through static checklists or by adjusting testing parameters based on actual transaction volume and identified control volatility.
03
Where do we find them?
We recruit from CPA firms and corporate internal audit departments within regulated industries. Professionals often consider a move when their current organization lacks a clear roadmap for SOX automation or when the audit scope remains stagnant. Candidates are likely to look for new opportunities if their present team restricts their exposure to complex enterprise risk projects or if the reporting hierarchy prevents direct engagement with senior management.
We target auditors currently in Senior Auditor roles who seek supervisory decision rights, specifically those wanting to own the audit program lifecycle. We also reach out to risk consultants in firms who have hit a ceiling on growth and want to transition to an internal leadership function. These candidates generally possess a strong grasp of control mapping and testing standards.
04
Which hiring mistakes should you watch for?
- 01Hiring managers overlook IT audit knowledge in financial auditors, creating silos that prevent a holistic view of risks.
- 02Prioritizing software experience over core auditing methodology leads to hires who cannot adapt to changing regulatory standards.
- 03Failing to confirm their ability to present findings to non-technical stakeholders, resulting in audit reports that do not drive corrective action.
05
The search in three steps
- 01We map the current audit hierarchy in your industry to identify candidates with the correct scope of control oversight.
- 02We screen candidates against specific SOX, SOC, or risk policies based on your audit project needs.
- 03We manage the interview process. No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire.
How your Internal Audit Supervisor search runs
How does The Six-Step Search work?
One sequence, from a well-defined seat to a shortlist you can judge.
Search Calibration
We start with a call about the seat, the books, the owners and the people the hire will work with. We learn what the role must fix in the first year and what would make a candidate wrong even if the resume looks right.

Market Mapping
We map the companies and institutions where the right people already work: similar size, similar ownership, similar complexity, in your market and in others.
You get: The target list of companies and institutions we will search, reviewed with you before outreach.
Professional Contact Intelligence
We find direct ways to reach the people on the map. Most are employed and not reading job boards, so reaching them takes real research.
