01
What does this hire really come down to?
Can the person build a deal pipeline from zero? They must possess a deep network of vendors and direct borrowers who need capital for machinery or specialized assets. Who approves the adjustment if they cannot identify leads and close deals independently?
The work involves sizing deals, analyzing creditworthiness, and presenting terms that align with your firm’s risk appetite. They must understand the difference between healthy debt and bad credit. Expect them to move through sales cycles with minimal oversight while managing their own travel and prospecting schedules.
Ask how they find their best leads. Ask for their rejection rate on past applications. Ask them to explain a deal they lost and why it happened. If they cannot describe their specific process for identifying qualified targets, keep looking.
Determine which collateral types your credit team underwrites. Ask the candidate to explain their process for identifying a prospect before making a call. Request details on their last three funded deals including equipment type and transaction size. If they cannot explain how they managed these deals through underwriting without your involvement they are not a fit. Evaluate their understanding of margin compression by asking how they handled pricing objections on recent submissions. If they blame market conditions instead of explaining their own deal structure flaws they will struggle here. We only move forward if they provide proof of their past individual production figures.
- 01Can they demonstrate a history of originating equipment leases or loans from scratch?
- 02Do they have a specific list of equipment vendors or brokers they currently work with?
- 03Are they capable of managing a deal from initial conversation through to closing?
02
What do we check before you see anyone?
We examine their deal log to verify the number of closed transactions. We look for evidence of consistent production rather than isolated big wins.
We audit their knowledge of specific collateral types like heavy machinery or technology. They must know how to value the equipment for long-term recovery.
We check their ability to explain complex credit structures. They need to prove they can speak with your internal credit team effectively.
We review how they managed past deal declines. They must explain the specific credit or documentation gaps that led to the rejection.
We confirm they operate independently. You should not have to provide all their leads.
We confirm their understanding of equipment finance pricing models. They need to know how to maintain your profit margins.
- 01Direct production history
- 02Equipment asset class familiarity
- 03Credit structure fluency
- 04Deal rejection analysis
- 05Lead sourcing independence
- 06Pricing and margin management
03
Where do we find them?
We source candidates from independent equipment leasing companies and regional bank equipment finance divisions. These professionals are often looking for more competitive pricing or wider asset acceptance policies. We also look at specialized equipment brokers who want to transition to a primary lender role for more stability.
Candidates move when their current firm restricts their credit appetite or changes their commission structure. We find people frustrated by slow credit turnaround times at their current shop. They also move when a market shift makes their current niche less profitable.
- 01Professionals at independent leasing firms
- 02Regional bank equipment finance teams
- 03Equipment finance brokers
04
Which hiring mistakes should you watch for?
Hiring people who rely entirely on your firm's incoming leads instead of their own network.
Assuming a generic commercial lender has the specialized knowledge required for equipment collateral.
Failing to confirm the candidate's actual experience with specific equipment types versus general business lending.
- 01Over-reliance on firm-generated leads
- 02Lack of specialized equipment expertise
- 03Misunderstanding collateral valuation
05
What should we discuss first?
First, we define the exact asset classes you want to prioritize and identify candidates with relevant history. Second, we interview for their direct origination methods and credit judgment. Third, we present only those who have provided evidence of recent production and can answer your credit team's questions.
We do not charge an upfront fee. We get paid only if you hire a person we introduce to you. All terms will be agreed to in writing before we begin the search.
- 01Define target asset classes
- 02Screen for direct production
- 03Review production history
